Ive seen a "double adaptor" at the warehouse which has a USB socket on it. While not as integrated, its a cheaper option (around $20 I think). Cant see it on-line though...

Not sure if I'd want to put USB sockets on the wall when moble and computer interfaces can change so quickly eg: Thunderbolt vs USB3. No guarantee a possible near future USB4 will have the same connector/pin type.

So change the socket if/when that happens? So long as they go in the standard US flushboxes then its not a drama unless someone has committed the decorating sin of painting/plastering up to the powerpoint and got it on the powerpoint.

Don't take this personally, just stating the facts.

1A shared between 2 USB sockets is not much. A typical charger is 1A to 2A. The USB charging spec that most cell phone manufacturers adopted (amazing, agreed on a common charger, driven by Europe) is something like 1.7A, can't remember exactly now.

Having only an MOV for surge protection is too slow, it will take the grunt off the surge but not the initial spike which requires a TVS diode (transient voltage suppression diode). I don't know where they get the 20ns response time from, an MOV takes much longer to heat up and then start suppressing the surge. Perhaps it is 20ns after the MOV is triggered. MOVs by themselves are only good for appliances, not for switch mode power supplies.

Low cost, unbranded products use low cost connectors (some high cost products do also). The standard USB connector is rated for only 500 unsertions max, some even less. Good quality USB connectors are rated for 1,500 insertions. Best quality in the order of 3,000. (Mini and Micro USB is rated about 3x higher than standard USB.)

It is very hard to know which is a good quality product without opening it and even then you do not know the part number for the connector so you cannot find its rating. The safe options are go for a good brand name like Belkin, or get the cheap stuff knowing it is not good and will need replacement. It is not a case of just paying for the brand name.

FYI - although we paid $15, these are significantly more in retail shops (so aren't "low cost").
We've used these extensively and had no problems.

Slightly off topic; I just wish that PDL would come out with a 600 series USB type A module. They finally introduced a HDMI module years after HDMI became popular.

Go Keystone USB module with a clip to fit Keystone to PDL 600. That is what I did to get an Ethernet coupler on my wall plates and then run pre-terminated CAT6 cable through my house instead of wasting time making up cables.
