SirHumphreyAppleby:

You can use the Shelly, having it switch a second relay that can handle a higher load.

Most AC units offer control via WiFi (HTTP API)/IR or other interfaces that integrate with third party automation software. These provide more control and won't damage the equipment as you could when switching mains power.

Thanks thats a good idea. My AC is too old for the APIs I think (Fujitsu, about 10 years old). Any recommendation on the second relay please?

Thanks

Bought my first Shelly 1 relay which should be here soon, looking at putting it behind the garage light switch which is a standard classic On/Off up/down switch.

Is it best to replace the switch also to the newer button press?

I'm guessing if we wanted to automate the garage light switch with the older On/Off switch it would always need to be On and the Shelly module handles the On/Off?

Happy to replace the switch if its the better move.

Nope. You can keep the old switch....just set the shelly to fire every time the switch is operated so it always toggles to the other state - that way you'll never have to hit the switch twice to operate it. The only aesthetic issue is that it might appear in the on position while the light is off....but if you've got an loop circuits in your house (like at the ends of a hallway) you'll have that anyway ;-)

UPDATE: You'd only want to change to push button if you want to control a dimmer - because then a push button is easier to work with.

As Bewildered said, you can just keep the existing switch. Basically the existing switch and the Shelly PM1 have independent control of the light. I just did a standard install on my external lights, which means that if I want to use the existing light switch, up is always off and down always on, as per usual.

Whether the switch is up or down, the Shelly relay can override the current state, and I suppose vice versa, so it doesn't matter whether the lightswitch is off or on, Shelly can still turn on and off the outside lights.

As opposed to the toggle setting suggested by Bewildered, in my case if the Shelly relay has turned on the light while the switch was off and you want to turn it off manually you would first flick the standard switch to the on position and then back to off.

I've done all mine like that too - if you use the shelly to turn a light on, the switch will still be in the off position.

Conversely, if I turn a light on with the switch, then off with the shelly later, the switch will remain in the on position - its not really a big deal.

I only have push buttons on the dimmers.

Lol.....I had it in 'switch position' mode for all about two minutes when my partner tried to turn the light off (switch in off position, light on via shelly). Her reaction was priceless - "Oh my God you've been at it for two minutes and you've already broken it! I'm not going to go around hitting switches multiple times just to turn sh*t on and off...."...needless to say we've been in 'Edge' mode on everything since then....and everybody is happy...  :-)  I have about 30 Shelly 1, 1PM, 2.5, Dimmer, and RGBW now....let's just say I'm fully committed....

Ok…..an update re the dimmer flicker issue. There’s a new closed beta firmware out which seems to (so far) have fixed the problem. If it holds then ill be stoked. These dimmer2s are otherwise extremely robust

How do you go about getting the closed beta firmware update? I’d be interested too if this solves the flicker issue.

If it goes well they are planning to push it wide next week

I’m keeping an eye on 3 circuits today. So far so good

Shelly released the official update this morning which seems to completely address the flicker issue with the Dimmer 2s

I can now wholeheartedly recommend these for use in NZ to retro-fit smarts to lights while still maintaining working physical switches.

Combined with a Raspberry Pi and Homebridge this has huge family acceptance factor with scenes "Hey Siri, its movie time" and rock solid Home app support.

I sourced my shelly's from Smarthomeshop here in NZ https://smarthomeshop.co.nz/ - the sparky had no issues installing them with PDL Momentary switches allowing single push on/off and long push manual dimming.

I don't like my momentary switches I put in. Wife absolutely hates them. They are too hard (require force) to press. If you quickly walk past and try flick it on the way, it often doesn't work.

I have one room with single, and another room with double (dim +/-). I don't think I ever use it and instead use my voice to dim %.

I still have to get my S together and sell my spares. Also have spare Temp and Humidity sensors incl USB power mount.

I have this problem with the push to dim lights too, I don’t think it’s a Shelly problem. I have PDL BLE push dimmers and I often walk past, hit the momentary button on the way through and nothing happens. Clicking and holding to dim takes ages.

I’m considering in future installing Shellys with normal up/down switches, then doing all dimming via apps/voice.

Yeah it's not Shelly it's definitely PDL. Changing the spring mech somehow might help - but I think i'll just swap back.

I agree, the PDLs could be better, but there don't seem to be many other options in NZ with good momentary action. The Iconics might be better? All our fittings are 600 series though

Mine are Iconic - could even be worse.

I didn't see any way to modify them to be like the higher priced ?BLE? pushbutton mechs.
