I ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 from PB Tech yesterday afternoon and it arrived just after 7am this morning.

They included a power adaptor and an "official" Raspberry Pi case for the board.

I also ordered an 8GB "NOOBS" Micro-SD....though that seems to be for the Raspberry Pi 2. I'll have to research that. I'd like to have the wifi working on the Pi 3.

Took this photo about 5 mins after receiving it. Some assembly was required, but not much. :-)

it took me a while to get the microSD card in, i had to take the pi out of the case, then I discovered theyre arent spring loaded any more, they were on pi1 and pi2 :)

thought i was missing the slide in slot and going under it.

Yep, the lack of a spring for the sd card caught me out.

The pre-loaded Micro-SD was a waste other than the media itself.

The RP3 booted to a rainbow screen.....and no further. The RP2 pre-load doesn't work.

I downloaded the latest NOOBs (v1.8.0) and re-formatted the Micro-SD. It had been 1GB but now is 8GB.

I copied the NOOBs over to the M-SD and tried booting that. I had no problems inserting the M-SD chip.

Works. No problem. Booted into the NOOBS menu and I'm now halfway through a Raspian install.

Was the RPi 1 spring loaded?

I always accidentally pressed the micro SD card out of the RPi 2 when I was connecting/disconnecting cables to it which made it 'spring' out, I think it's a good idea that the RPi 3 doesn't have a spring anymore so you can't accidentally eject it if you press it while holding the sides of the device!

The Pi 1 "B+" was spring-loaded. Earlier ones weren't, and the card sensor had a habit of failing. I ended up getting a B+ solely because I had one too many "card not present" errors!

I'm very happy.

I now have my RPI3 running as a "Valid, Running" Tor relay via wifi. It's headless and keyboardless and I can SSH into it from my phone, tablet, laptop or desktop on the local LAN only.

It's just sitting there on the shelf near the wifi AP connected physically only to the mains power.

Perfect.

What an awesome little device.

I know, they're a really neat package. The eco system has built up to a good extent so there's heaps of information around.

I got openelec / kodi running on mine in about 15 minutes, most of that time was letting it download software.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

any h264 videos will be fine (which most videos are encoded in). VC-1 (not very common) you need to buy a license key for aswell as MPEG2. h265/hevc it will software decode and not very well (also not very common).

personally, it plays back all my 1080p movies just fine, and you shouldnt have any problems.

If I buy a Raspberry Pi 3 can I swap it with my old R-Pi and have it run Openelec / Kodi ok (after copying the files to from my SDHC card to a micro-SDHC card)? Or is there a different version of Openelec / Kodi that I have to download and set up?

personally I would just download and install a fresh copy of osmc (kodi os for the raspberry pi) and you should be setup in minutes.

It's a different CPU architecture so I don't think the files for Pi1 would run on Pi3.

The download process through NOOBs is very very easy.

The process to set up IR remote control is not....
