Yep, it’s fairly straight-forward to do this; it’s how I borrowed and read ebooks from the library on my Kindle, before buying a Kobo. I’d just delete the book manually once read (as, of course, there’s no longer any expiry date).

All you need to do is import the downloaded book file (which you’d need to download anyway if transferring it to a Kobo via Adobe Digital Editions) into Calibre for doing the other stuff...

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't realise there was a question directed at me.

Yes, I'm almost certain it is. And it doesn't look like you can turn the backlight off. Its like most modern cars where the instrument panel is lit up 24/7 even when you're reading in broad daylight. Seems a bit silly.

@jonathan18 I finally got around to trying this, and was pretty painless once I figured out the Calibre plugin I needed. Would be a lot nicer if you could just browse the library from you Kindle how you do with the Kindle store, but it's a decent workaround. Thanks.

Are you able to confirm what that plugin is please?

@allan The one I used is DeDRM, it's not in the list of available plugins in Calibre, so you need to download it and use the "load plugin from file" option.

I'm not sure of the legality of removing the DRM, so to stay as within the rules as possible you should delete the converted file as soon as you return the borrowed eBook.

@networkn I hadn't look at this thread in a while, so you've probably figured it out my now. But just in case:

DISCLAIMER: I'll mention again that these instructions are meant to assist people in reading borrowed library books on Kindles, and not to assist people in pirating these books to keep and/or share. To stay within the rules you must delete your converted copy of the ebook as soon as you return the borrowed one to the library.

When you double-click the ACSM file, Adobe Digital Editions then downloads an EPUB to you "Documents\My Digital Editions" folder.

You can then import that EPUB into Calibre (with the DeDRM plugin installed) and convert to a Kindle supported format.

Something I've just discovered is that Kobo has extended the ability to borrow library books directly from the e-reader to a bunch of their other models.

I've got a Kobo Aura HD, and I purchased this primarily as it was the only e-reader on which I could directly borrow library books from my local library using OverDrive (which is owned by Kobo's parent company).

Through a firmware update released a couple of months ago, now the Clara HD, Aura H20 Edition 2 and Aura Edition 2 can have OverDrive access built in.

I assume this also applies to Kobo's new model, the Forma which, like the Aura HD is waterproof and, like the Kindle Oasis, has a few buttons to the right of the screen.

It sure does, it's listed as a feature of the Forma. A great looking e-reader with pretty much every feature you could ever want, but too pricey for me; I'll have to stick with my Kobo Glo.
