Yay. I just ordered an Echo Dot Gen2 to see what all the fuss is about via Youshop. It should arrive in Portland tomorrow :D

How much do they set you back landed?

I have recently ordered a two-pack of Roku express sticks, a two pack of USB roku stick power cables (supposedly with some electronics to store/boost current and allow the stick to reliably power off the TV USB) and a echo dot+Sony BT speaker package. Each one had an indicidual YouShop delivery price of $19.50 and when I consolidated them to 1 package it was $58.50 which was incredibly disappointing.

Youshop seems very inconsistent. Sometimes fantastic, sometimes poor value. It must be whoever is on deck on the day...

On the other hand the value of the purchase items was amazing. Roku sticks were US$23.50 each, the Echo Dot + Sony BT speaker was US$58.

So I had a moan at YouShop about the zero consolidation saving and this is their reply - I am not kidding.

"Consolidation is beneficial if you consolidate three or more parcels and if you consolidate there is minimal if any savings at all."

WTF?

I have not had the youshop bill yet. But so far it was $86 NZD. So thats a bit for shipping to youshops inwards goods in Portland, + exchange rate.

I think youshop will probably charge me roughly ~$17. So yeh just over $100... Probably $105 all up to my home in Auckland.

I think I need to buy another Dot (#3). Can't get my Google Home to recognise both Hue Bulbs and emulated Hue Bulbs (via HABridge). I need the emulation because HABridge is emulating Insteon switches which don't have native Echo support for the International versions.

Should have picked up one on Prime Day.

Annoyingly for my son (and posted in another thread) he can't get his Dot to work at Auckland University since it never sees the student WiFi network. It could be WPA2-PSK Enterprise but you would think it would see the network unless it was operating on a frequency band that the Dot can't access?

I just got mine delivered today and I tried to change the location but no luck.

Has anyone done this recently?

I tried to follow this instruction:

That method doesn't work with latest software. AFAIK you can't change the location to NZ. Doesn't really matter though.

The main difference is for the Echo you have to say "Alexa, what is the weather in Wellington, New Zealand" while for GH you can just say "Hey Google, what's the weather"

Correct. At least you can set the correct timezone through the app now.

I just picked up another Dot, refurbished from Amazon. NZD$61 and $17 for Youshop so $78 landed in NZ.

I was thinking of getting a couple more, but TBH now I have cured my chromecast issues I am using them a lot more for sending music to multiple stereos. They really need to add group play to the dots before I will be investing in them anymore.

For anyone who has musicflow stuff as well as echo;s and chromecast audios, it seems there is some weird compatibility issue between their announcing things on the LAN and I can only choose 2 of the 3 devices to stick on any given vlan and not have things crash all the time.

I've setup with the beta Vera-Echo skill from here:

http://support.getvera.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2648086-vera-smarter-home-control-%E2%96%BE-alexa-skills-kit-%E2%96%BE-beta

And it pretty much worked first time with our Yale z-wave lock. I can say "Alexa, lock the front door" or "Alexa, is the front door locked".

But... despite the fact there is only one lock, she always says "there are multiple devices, which one" (or something like that) so I say "the front door" and then it works. So that's really annoying and slow. Not sure why it doesn't just work on the one device it actually knows?

So could I yell "Alexa, unlock the front door" in a window at your place and have her let me in?

:)

Cheers - N

Nah it doesn't do unlock :-) ...  only lock and checks state.

Just after I posted above I resolved the issue about naming the lock. The device's name "front door lock" makes the commands ambiguous as lock can be noun or verb. So I added a custom device name "front door" for the device in the Vera - Alexa setup and now it works flawlessly.
