Just to break the monotony i've seen the Sony Ereader PRSt1 for $70 on some of those deal/voucher sites.

I've been using one for the past couple years, with a patch installed that lets you use Android 2.3.4 (the T1 already runs off it but it is hidden), install whatever including the kindle app, ebookdroid, comic readers, music apps, the old Google Reader etc and read every single format out there. SD card reader, headphone jack, etc.

You're not tied to any proprietary format or book store that way. Not for your grandma but top stuff for your geek ;-)

seems impressive but you just need to install a patch and voila - android.
it only gets complicated if you want lots of space for more apps.

apparently the T2 also has a rooting patch (http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2012/10/10/rooting-package-for-sony-reader-prs-t2-now-available/)

if like me you prefer to be able to do what YOU want on your gadgets, just like on your PC, an Android-rooted ereader is the nec plus ultra.

I've just spent a stupid amount of time researching, and concluded that I should buy a kindle.
I've never tried e-book readers before. I don't do a tonne of reading, but if Wifey & I liked it, we could share or buy a couple.

Whats the story?
I understand the e-ink experience, and it seems pretty nice.
However, everyone seems to rate the paperwhite, but I can't get my head around it.
Does paperwhite really work in terms of giving you a pleasant reading experience?

I'm thinking maybe i should buy a cheap old / used e-ink one to see how it matches our lifestyle / preferences / etc.

Hi we have 3 paperwhites and there great used on a beach in the sun or at home reading in the dark its just easy on the eye

There is no V's just lighting. Paperwhite Kindles or Kobo Glos or Auras are E-ink with front lighting.

I rate Kindle Paperwhite as better than paper these days. It has a light so you can read while your partner's sleeping, screen really is close to or as good as paper, you can change font size, and it's super light. I used to be dead against e-readers but since I got the paperwhite I haven't read a real book. They're too heavy, they types of books I read.

My wife has the Kobo Aura and absolutely loves it. So do I, at night time, as she cam read without the bedside light being on and I can sleep.

Are you that case sensitive? V for versus as in "Paperwhite vs e-ink"

Nothing wrong with paperwhite, we have one, but also look at Kobo Aura HD just to see bigger screen and higher definition (and price).
