The thing is that you can really only use helicopters on fine days without any wind anyway, so the days you can use them are greatly reduced in my area. I feel far more vulnerable with people hitting golf balls around the park, as they can just come from anywhere, and you can get hit by a golf ball in the head or eye, which can either blind or kill you. Feel tthe same when people are playing cricket, you have to watch it, otherwise you can get a ball flying at you.

Think Auckland is slow? Asked Wellington City Council yesterday and got this:

Thank you for email regarding a published set of rules for the Wellington Region for the flying unmanned aircrafts.

We have forwarded your email to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as they are best suited to respond. You can also contact the CAA directly with the contact details below...

CAA was very quick to send me information - links to circular 101.

There you go. Wellington doesn't even know what we're talking about it seems.

Hen combined with the statement from Auckland stating that they had no inkling that this was going to be the policy announced, it appears that there has been absolutely no official communication between CAA and the councils/other public land owners--

That has some serious applications. Imagine if you could make it silent running...

I wonder where this would leave us if we had a repeat of the Angry Birds incident? to explain, my wife brought back from China a small Angry Birds helicopter that would go up and down off your hand it was cool in our high roof house, well she decided to see how it would go
outside, well long story short it took off and continued to go up and up and up and up, we kept track of it with binoculars  as it went higher and towards the western hills, we estimated the height at well over 1000 feet we eventually lost sight of as it was too high to see.
We has postulated many theories as to what happened.

Ok, got to talk to someone else at Wellington council and received a more positive story.

Our current bylaws and policies do not prohibit the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) but that is on the basis that they do not interfere /restrict other users or cause health and safety issues just like any other recreational activity. In addition much of Wellington is controlled airspace (4km radius from the airport).

As a general guide, you can fly your RPA

  • In uncontrolled airspace below 400 feet above ground level
  • During daylight hours
  • Within visual line of sight
  • Clear of all manned aircraft, persons &
  • Outside of airspace restricted areas
  • Not within 4km of any aerodrome
  • If you know the CAA regulations

We also ask users to register their flights on airshare.co.nz

The link to the bylaws are here:

I have found (in the distant past) that a pistol unless high caliber would not be enough to deal with possums. I emptied a whole Mag from my Sterling into one before it dropped. I was also treed by a Captain Cooker after putting a round
into it and it just kept coming without even slowing, the evil sod. Oh the memories of youth
