"n February, Tesla and the government of South Australia announced a plan to create the largest virtual power plant in the world — 50,000 5 kilowatt rooftop solar systems, each paired with a 13.5 kilowatt-hour battery for a total system output of 250 megawatts and 625 megawatt-hours of storage. So far, the installation of rooftop solar and storage batteries has been completed on 100 homes and the results are everything Tesla expected them to be.

In a recent statement, the government praised the first virtual power plant (VPP) systems for, 'delivering cheaper energy to South Australians who need it most, and increasing the reliability of the state’s energy network. The results of preliminary testing show that the Tesla Powerwalls installed in homes can deliver the same type of performance when it comes to providing rapid and accurate response to frequency changes as the grid-scale Tesla battery array installed in South Australia at the end of last year."

Finally received my Powerwall 2 quote, 3 weeks after the onsite inspection. $14,155 installed.

I have decided NOT to proceed, mainly as Tesla has not yet released the firmware update that allows the battery to be topped up from the grid off peak. I just don't have enough spare solar to justify it, I wouldn't fill the battery until late spring!

Would you be able to say with which company gave you that quote? Because Tesla doesn't do the installations directly, they work with various partners and the one they sent us quoted $15.499 for the first powerwall with the gateway, and $14.000 for each additional powerwall. Which I thought it was quite absurd compared to the prices on Tesla's website, and now even more absurd when I see the quote you got :O

Did you calculate how long it would take to pay itself off based on savings you would make on electricity usage ? If so how long and what levels of usage do you have ? Does the Tesla Powerwall 2 price include the solar panels ?

Do not know who the subcontractor was that Tesla sent round, they aren't mentioned on any of the documents. The price of the Powerwall 2 did increase shortly after I got this quote, so that would explain why they are more expensive now.

Tesla emailed me last week, the firmware update that allows time based control being rolled in NZ now. This means you can top up the battery with cheap overnight rates. This makes a lot of sense if you’re with Flick. Never pay peak rates again! This significantly reduces payback time.

You could say that you would like to pay the quoted price instead of the increased price if the quote is still valid?

I Signed up and paid my deposit to kick of the Powerwall purchase process on 19th July.

An installer visited and did a review of my porperty on 30th July

They emailed me on 31 July saying they would get back to me in 1-2 weeks.

3 weeks later... nothing heard!

Interesting reading all of this information.

We were very fortunate 2 years ago to win the use of a 3kw system with Tesla powerwall (6.7kw?), which we upgraded to 4kw,care of vector (Future of Energy competition) .Love the system, with solar edge 5kw inverter. Of course these have been superseeded by the Powerwall 2.

We have just changed to Electric Kiwi now our 2 year contract with Meridian is up. The "hour of free power" is quite amazing. Vector contol the oversight of the system at this stage and we get the use of the power. During the hour of free of free power, vector have set up battery to charge for an hour. In one hour it will suck up 3.35kw of power- all free. This is at 9-10pm. This will usually last us through the night. At this time we also put a load in the cloths drier, put on the dish washer and heat the whole house. In winter we do not generate enough, but with this, we will often buy a few kw in the morning, and with 8kw free in the evening and what we generate, we get through on solar. We will probably change in summer as electric kiwi do not buy back units.

Finally got my quote after 3 1/2 weeks, installation and shipping costs seem to be a bit higher for mine... IM in Christchurch?

Have just stumbled on this article as I'm researching whether to go for the PW2.

I'm interested in the Powerwall2 and solar panels and need about 50KWH per day.

Is it now possible to top up the battery at night?

I live in Auckland region - who would you recommend as a supplier / installer - or is it better to just go direct to tesla nz https://www.tesla.com/en_NZ/powerwall

Considering that wrecked EV's may be soon available, and EV batteries are vastly exceeding lifespan expectations, it seems a good way to go.

Hello HamiltonJack.

I had a Powerwall 2 installed in Otaki last December. I ordered it through the Tesla website and Downer ended up doing the installation. There may be other options but this worked out for me. Total cost including install was just under $14k.

Yes, you can charge it with overnight offpeak power, as well as with excess daytime solar. I have it set up in “Advance Time-Based Control .. Cost Saving Mode”. This is pretty much set and forget .. it handles everything automatically and decides itself how much to top up overnight, etc. It isn’t as clever as it could be, though. It seems to base the algorithm on what happened the previous day. So if you have a very sunny day with lots of excess solar, it appears to think that the next day will also be sunny, and doesn’t top up much with overnight offpeak. I would prefer that it used some forecast of expected solar, but c’est la vie.
