Got a Sonos software update (8.5.2) this morning and 'Voice Services' have been enabled for your country.

I'm skipping around the house like a dog with two tails!!!!

Checking to see what I can now do...

were you using it previously with the accounts set to the US? If so have you moved them to NZ, and have you noticed any difference between capability and it's ability to understand you?

This week I received an email from Sonos titled "An update to our privacy statement."

Long story short - what is particularly disconcerting is that Sonos are going to require users to submit data on their use of Sonos if they want to continue using the product. Users who refuse to do so will be restricted from updating devices and may lose functionality over time.

"Going forward, users will not be able to opt out of Sonos collecting their product type, controller device type, operating system, software version information, content source, signal input, Wi-Fi antenna information, audio settings, product orientation, room names (as assigned by the end user) and whether you’ve used the Sonos Trueplay technology to tune output." Link here

In my view, this is disgraceful. I purchased Sonos hardware simply to stream my music - why should I be coerced into sharing data on my speaker usage with the company?! I currently own five Sonos speakers and was considering getting a Playbase and subwoofer - but that purchase is now on permanent hold. Great hardware, and should remain just that, hardware, not a data sharing device.

All content you play on Sonos is streamed through Sonos's servers, meaning they've known what you're playing for quite a while now...

But they have had no idea who you are unless you have registered with Sonos which, to date, has been voluntary.

In future, you will be required to register to continue to receive updates.
