Yes exactly. When you are off your home network the MiLight app talks to the cloud server - which the wifi bridge is talking to as well. When you hit a button in the MiLight app the command goes to the cloud server and then to your wifi bridge.

When you are on your home network the app talks direclty to the wifi bridge.

Correct,  and if you open up the Windows 7 app tool, you can see the cloud server URL, you can disable it, or you can point it at another cloud service.

Really keen to get into this smart bulb thing. I want a bunch of RGBW bulbs and to use IFTT to control everything. Are limitless what I need? Also I notice limitless has a led strip controller, I have a bunch of led strips already, can I use their strip controller to use that with IFTT as well?

Ive dusted off my gateways that have been sitting in a box since I swapped some lights out for wemo ones (don't go there BTW) and my E27 downlights were swapped out for boring plain white LED downlights.

Will have a play during the week. There is no direct IFTTT support, but will see how the tchart goes once I have everything paired up again.

If you have a WiFi bridge then you are welcome to try my IFTTT server for the Limitelsss bulbs. As explained you do lose remote access (ie 3G/4G) but you can leave it up to IFTTT to turn the lights on and off and use "Do Button" to switch them manually if you want.

I've just bought some LIFX bulbs.

Pros:

• Nice and bright
• Free shipping to NZ
• Excellent colour range (particularly at about 50% brightness)
• Fast start up and response time
• The effects (particularly the "spooky" effect) are pretty cool
• Native integration with IFTTT
• No bridge/driver required

Cons:

• App is ever so slightly clunky
• Windows App pretty limited
• A pain to connect the bulbs to the wifi (first time setup)
• Much more expensive than NZD115
• Kids can't stop fiddling with them
• Wife came home to a red neon light in the bedroom and thought I was up to no good

I got a four pack, so it worked out about NZD 60-ish per bulb from memory. I managed to justify <cough> rationalise this to myself by saying it was only twice the price of a decent dimmable LED bulb, and I didn't need to get the special dimmer switches, and there was so much more pointless functionality.

I did come across the Qube on Indigogo the other day though. Starts at USD 19 per bulb. Haven't compared the specs etc. Didn't want to having just shelled out twice the price per bulb...
