Ah Excellent,
I did use a Sterling submachine gun on a rabbit that was stupid enough to be in the wrong place once... I emptied the mag and was completely unsuccessful at hitting the rabbit

Ah Excellent,
I did use a Sterling submachine gun on a rabbit that was stupid enough to be in the wrong place once... I emptied the mag and was completely unsuccessful at hitting the rabbit

My Son accidently hit a Kaimanawa Brumby with a C-9 that would not have been a pretty sight, but we digress

Just to be clear... is that video of *your* quadcopter? In NZ? Bearing in mind the furore in the US over someone who did what's portrayed in the video?

image recognition system and it send it out alone to shoot rabbits on the golf course Edit: At night of course...I'm not insane

I'm not comfortable with the idea of autonomous devices flying around the countryside blazing away with guns, day or night.

But I wonder how close you could get to a rabbit (or possum) at night with a drone, using IR vision? Could you fly up to it and shoot it at close range with a short-range weapon like a speargun? Or have a weapon that fired vertically downward, so that a miss would go straight into the ground? That could almost be done safely, I'd say. I guess we'll never know, since drone flying at night isn't allowed.

I recon it would be very good for shooting down at rabbits at night. (subsonic 22 with a suppressor) Imagine a thermal imager with "rabbit image recognition" You would probably want a go/no go switch to prevent the whole "autonomous killing machine" argument. and obviously a good lawyer to keep you out of jail.

I can just picture the twitter outcry now

It does not need autonomous flying thingys for cowboys to be blazing away, they are out there already, it is why I gave up hunting years ago after a close shave in the Kaweka's

So they didn't read the news or see it on TV, it has been discussed openly in the media for months. They should have used their initiative, it is not as though they don't have staff earning hundred of thousands of dollars. I used my initiative by contacting the council as to what was going, on well before the new law came in, and I didn't have any communciations with the CAA.

Considering how many TAs there are in NZ, a list of 4 is pretty pitiful, considering how long they have had to develop their policies and rules. I am guessing it will also need to go into their district plans.

better yet, get caught flying a 100g Quadracopter your local park, refuse to pay a fine let it go to court... Either the judge stops laughing long enough to give the CAA / local council the bollocking their lives for waiting the courts time with a vexatious prosecution, and dismisses the case or you will be discharged without conviction. Even with a conviction CAA will get such a hard time they will end up having to change the law.

I think it hilarious that one needs to file a flight plan with Airshare because Wellington is mostly controlled air space. It's a full page form with lots of questions - in my case we're talking about a 15cm quadcopter, about 500 grams, flying at less than 400 feet about 20kms from the airport.

Yes, forgot to mention battery life for this "flight" is about 12 minutes according to the manual and specifications...

It almost takes longer to create a flight plan to actually fly it.
