They had the other echo devices on sale too, but I though this was a pretty nice deal.

Has anyone tried "Call [someone] on Skype"?

Mine is saying "I can't call Skype from this device"...

Parents-in-law now have an Amazon Echo (actually two devices)... I have their email address on my contacts including the same email address as their Amazon account.

How long does it take for them to show up as Alexa contacts for an Alexa call? Or do we have to do something else?

Nah... Echo to Echo call.

I have Skype linked. If I say "Call [name]" it will correctly call via Skype - in this specific case parents-in-law have an Amazon Echo and they don't appear as "Alexa Call" enabled - while other people I know do appear.

I thought it only used phone numbers to match up? I have refused alexa app permission to my contacts and I get nothing out of the call part of it.

Excellent. That'll make much more useful for me. Only really using it now for light control and Harmony remote controls.

I've only just brought my first "dot". Controls some Hue bulbs and my heat pumps (Mitsubishi) and harmony to turn on the Apple TV. I'm more likely to invest more in the ecosystem now that my main music source is included.

If they put Apple Music on FireTv (along with a native youtube app) I could be tempted to change.

Yep I'm much the same.  Alexa does seem like the most mature and extensible platform, having used Google Home a bit and having no interest in investing in Homepod given how crap Siri is.  So it's nice to see some bigger and more proprietary services heading to the platform.

Another interesting thing on my setup: I can't control the Fire TV from the Amazon Echo - supposedly you can ask to play a movie or open an app like Netflix but it tells me it can't connect to the Fire TV.

Also interested to know how long between contact refreshes - I've made sure my in-laws' phone number on account matches the one I have on my phone book and theirs still won't appear as an Alexa call on my app - but @michaelmurfy shows up there.
