Am already downloading it to install as a vm on my current WHS.

Yep, wondering if hyper-v can be added to the base W2k8 os. I'll be able to use the other 4gb of ram on my WHS machine finally.

Interesting to note the 64bit requirement, Atom 270 which is used in lots of WHS v1 boxes is not x64bit capable.

If you're looking and buying/building a low power WHS now and want to upgrade to v2 later, make sure you get something on the Atom 330 platform.

Are those atoms enough for the video transcode function? I thought it needed something a litttle more 'meaty'.

I doubt it.

Intel do have new chipsets coming out, H55 (I think) which has low power cpu and gpu that does hardware acceleration though.

interestingly enough it looks like we might see Aurora too - read the article for more info but is this the future of SBS?

I have been testing the WHS v2 VAIL beta for the last couple of months. Did you guys know that VAIl is the direct replacement to the current WHS v1 OS and is mainly targeting the consumer market.

MS is about to release a new WHS based OS code named “Aurora” specifically designed for the small business. Is anyone running Aurora? I have been trying to get my hands on it and filled out the MS connect form.

I was somewhat shocked to find that there is no upgrade path to Vail. ie you have to put all your data somewhere else. Run the install and then copy the data back onto the server. For me this is a show stopper. I don't have that kind of disk capacity just sitting around..

Aurora sounds like it might be the "higher end" home server that has been talked about for some time.

Yeah you are right and just a friendly reminder DO NOT USE V2/BETA stuff in a production environment yet!

I am going to have to figure out how to move 8TB WHS v1 storage to WHS v2 without buying 8 additional TB - nuts.

It's almost like you have to dual boot it (in the absence of more hardware).

In WHS, deallocate a drive, let it muck around with the files and leave the drive empty, then add it to vail. Rinse and repeat for eat drive.

Thats the only way I thought of doing it (I haven't done it, let me make that clear). Or wait for an upgrade tool maybe when the RTM is out.

You might have to actually disable Folder Duplication to make enough space if your drives are full. After this then you can start removing drives, one at a time. When the drives are removed, copy the content to the now freed drives, unplug those drives.

Install Vail, and after completion plug the removed drives. Do not add to storage, instead copy one at at time. When one drive is copied, add it to the storage, until all drives are done.

You might just blow it up, but a for a lot of people with terabytes of digital content this is not an option - you will have to manage storage during transition, or add more capacity.
