Are you looking for work in the bigger cities or smaller centres?

I don't know the IT sector but in the sectors I have worked in, if you are in smaller city and looking for specialised staff you have less choice so are less likely to get hung up on 'nz experience'

I worked at a medium sized business in a small centre that was a mini-UN. We had about 1 nationality for every ~10 employees. made for a great workplace.

IMO generally immigrants are far better workers than kiwis. Not sure if its the current generation but so many people are apathetic, don't want to work hard or lack commitment. That being said for some jobs there is benefit in having more knowledge around local customs etc. - that doesn't necessarily need to come from having "local" experience.

Although it is a huge generalization, from my recent experience there does seem to be a generation thing with many people under 30 being apathetic. Some I have encountered in work situations can also be rude, arrogant and know alls, and I have even gone as far as telling one of them that. But maybe that has always been the case. Age does change peoples perspective.

I think a lot of it comes down to pay. People now have to pay anywhere between 600,000 to a million to buy a house in Auckland. That involves a huge mortgage, and requires a certain pay level. Many businesses are wanting workers, but many of the jobs don't actually pay much, and certainly not enough to service a mortgage. People who don't have a house also don't want to just be working to live, ad pay off someone elses mortgage. So perhaps many NZer don't want to settle for mediocrity. So the government are bringing in people into the country to fill these lower wage positions, maybe because the conditions are better than the country they are leaving. In a way it is win win, except it is helping to push house prices up due to a lack of supply.

Yeah. People want lots of things out of their life, and some of those are funded by their job. If your life expectations is a suburban idyll with your own house, 2 cars, 2.4 kids, and a boat, then you have certain salary requirements. In the long term, if you're not getting the rewards you expect, then you're not going to put in the maximum effort. Of course, the perception of inadequate rewards may be due to unrealistic expectations. A couple of jobs will amend those expectations, one way or the other.

I think it is a cultural thing as well. In NZ, many people see success as being that house, 2 cars, 2.4 kids, and a boat, and measure themselves off against others. Whereas other cultures can be different. eg In some cultures the oldest child is expected to buy a house for their parents and support them. Others will work in NZ and send money back to their country to support family.
