Job is still open. Haven't had a single application yet that has got my puzzle. Hence why I asked on here.

The problem with it is everyone is assuming it's a development style puzzle, when really I just want you to read the question, copy the code into VS or dotnetfiddle and get the answer for the code, then relate it back to the question. I do need to simplify it, seems a real shame that I do though. It shouldn't take anyone more than 5 minutes to complete this if they have basic understanding of how to use VS and google. I don't like the idea of having to explicitly tell people it isn't really a development puzzle but I guess I have to.

Is completing puzzles and doing tests common for IT jobs?

For my current job (web developer) I had to show my employer a few projects that I'd worked on, but there were no tests or anything. For another job that I applied for they got me to do an IQ test thing, and they then called me in for an interview (in the end they offered me a job but I didn't like the terms so turned them down).

I know that places like Google and Microsoft like to test their potential employees but so far I haven't really encountered it in NZ.

It is not uncommon for developer or devops positions to request a simple coding exercise to prove you can actually write code without stackoverflow help.

I had a technical test for my current sysadmin job. But it was pretty basic. Find the name of the DC you're connected to, what GP is applying etc etc.
