My wife's iPhone 4 was purchased new in August 2010. It doesn't seem to last a day now and she only really uses for calls and the occasional photo. She normally has wifi on and 3G on (she shares my 3G via 2Degrees) so she can run some little apps like weather etc but she hardly ever surfs the net on the phone.

Anyway the battery life is becoming poorer and I was wondering if I should replace the battery.

There are a few on Trademe but as an Android person myself I really don't know how hard it is to do (apart from some iFixit instructions I found and who is selling reputable batteries, Trademe or elswhere.

So some good user experiences would be of use.

Double check bluetooth setting, last update seemed to default it to bluetooth on

Will do that but the phone hasn't been updated for ages. I think it might still be on the original IOS Release it came with.

iOS updates did improve battery usage.
I tried to replace the battery on my iPhone 4, pulled the battery connector off the motherboard. Long story short, stuffed the phone. Get it replaced by an apple approved repairer to save any hassles. Also I am suspect of the batteries on trademe. Some did not fit right, and will not have the same longevity as genuine.

Replacing the battery is pretty easy really, as long as you have the right tools (pentalobe 5 point or normal cross screwdriver) depending on the screw used on the phone (be sure you check this first).

As for the battery, I suggest only use genuine one. Most of the batteries being sold on TM are cheap copies, stay away from these lot.

But before that, update it to the latest iOS. :)

Yeah as long as you bother to read the instructions or watch a 5 min youtube video it's pretty hard to mess up.

Time to buy a new iPhone!! The batteries are non-removable for a reason. (So that you just buy a new one). Iphone 5 will be out soon!

Well it's my wife's phone and I am of the opinion, if ain't broken, don't fix it. I always update Android on my phones(s) but I have different demands on the phone. All she wants to do is make calls, send text and take photos. She uses a few apps, checks the weather online, but that's about all.

I understand that but since the phone has never been updated (that I can recall - I certainly never did it), how could a new IOS release fix a problem that is only occurring now unless it has some feature for managing a slowly deteriorating battery.

The only thing I can think of is, the new IOS would manage the battery better with the phone being on 3G of wifi all the time. I turned them both off and that helped with the battery usage.

Well there is a good chance it will improve the battery life from what it is now,

Don't take some good advice and leave it on the old iOS and stop complaining about the battery life
