Does anyone now where to get them compressed? my internet has been running slow lately.

I know someone will correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the IPA file is a ZIP just with the extension changed.

If your looking to do a restore of the version that is currently on the phone i know in the past iTunes used to keep the file on your hard drive. If you have been doing OTA updates then as you can guess these will not be on your computer.

If your asking about iOS 6. It is still in GM release only so you will need a developer account.

i want to have the update compressed so its smaller and i can download it faster. ios 5.1.1 for iphone 3gs is like 687mb i want it compressed say to 100mb so it takes less time.

As noted above, the updates are already compressed. You're can't make them (much) smaller.

The update is mainly code. Code doesn't compress well. I bet Apple is interested in small updates as possible to save their own money distributing bytes. I doubt you will get anything smaller.

The costs of using a smartphone.

I think if you download iOS updates via iTunes, or web browser, it downloads the full install of that OS.
If you download from the iOS device itself, I believe it will download a delta update, i.e. an incremental update that is much smaller. Someone may know better than me however!

This site suggests the same thing "Note the ISPW files are significantly larger than the delta updates available through OTA software update, and are generally best used by advanced users."
