My phone is saying I have 10.3GB of music stored on my phone, but I only have 1,670 songs, how can this be possible?

160 songs couldbe 10GB...thats only 10MB per song which as about right for a higher quality encoding.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable amount of space for that many tracks.

I have the opposite problem - it refuses to sync random stuff. It doesn't complain about it, it just doesn't sync it. I have a 64GB iPhone 4S... with 30GB free space that SHOULD be full of music.

In actual fact I dont really care about having the music on my iPhone as I have an iPod as well which I prefer to have my music on, but I cant get the music off my phone!

You can set itunes to only sync playlists with the iphone. So you may setup a playlist to sync just your top rated songs, which may reduce your music on the iphone to 10% of all your music.

You friend probably has their music as low quality mp3s, While yours have probably been encoded at a higher quality.

yep thanks for that, problem is that I lost all my music on iTunes when my laptop died, so the music is ONLY on my phone. Happy to delete it off my phone, but then cant recover it to my Ipod

If your music was purchased from iTunes then you can easily re-download all past purchases at no charge. From memory that option is under your account information.

If purchased/obtained elsewhere then I think it's gone.  If you Google it there are some 3rd party programs that claim to be able to get songs off the device back into iTunes, but I have never used them.

Back-up lesson learnt!

On the iTunes "summary" page when you plug your device in you can select to reduce the size/quality of your songs (scroll down its near the bottom on that page). You can also choose to sync only selected songs or even manually manage your music - just drag and drop whatever you want on your device, so you can be selective and manage the storage that way.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

If purchased/obtained elsewhere then sorry it's gone. I don't believe you can get your music back off an "i" device. Its a one way deal. ? ??

I think there is 3rd party software that will extract it, but I think it puts all the music into their own folders. Really it should be a simple process but apple don't make things easy when you want to do something that is outside the box.

Holy thread drift batman,

Also the OP might get better responses if she didn't simply brush off replies with comments like
"In actual fact I dont really care about having the music on my iPhone "
after asking questions about music on here iPhone..
