Hi there

I have just got an IPad2 which I love but it is a bit tempremental with Wifi. It drops it and then says 'can't connect' when I retry. t also seems to be downloading podcasts very slowly.

All my other devices including an Apple TV 2 are fine. I have a Dynalink RTA1025 router.

From googling, there are obviously some issues but some posts have suggested that iPads are designed for Wireless N and wireless G gives problems.

Is this true? Are there any other key router settings I should check?

Sounds like your iPad may have a faulty wireless card or antenna. Try setting up a ad-hoc wireless network using another device and see if you still have the same problem. If you do its your iPad, if not it could be your wireless router.

Good suggestion. I set up wireless tethering on my android phone. The iPad can connect to the wireless tether, but not to the router. All other devices connect to the router fine.

Which suggests the issue is in the iPad - router connection? But why would all other devices be fine?

I'm also using a rta1025w and have no issues with our iPad 1 or 2 using G. We get good reception right through the house. I flashed the firmware on the router to the latest some time ago. Maybe check yours as someone suggested?

Can I ask are you using WPA or WPA2 security? My problems were with WPA2 but went when I changed to mixed WPA/WPA2

If you are running iOS 6 you might want to look at the Apple forums. My iPad2 has run perfectly for the past year on both my router and tethering to my phone. Until the update to iOS 6. WiFi drops out frequently with "can't connect" errors, then after a short time it connects again. It used to be fine on both G and N, now its disconnecting on everything.

Some of these suggestions in this thread might help you. They haven't helped me. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4383754?start=0&tstart=0

Mashable covered the issue: http://mashable.com/2012/09/28/ios-6-wi-fi/

So, before you blame your router, I suggest you look online at all the reports.

WPA-PSK and encryption TKIP+AES. Under basic settings I've got it on G mode only, auto channel and auto everything else.
My firmware is 3.64y

My husband's desktop card is flakey as hell (of two current laptops, two previous laptops, two iPads and an iPhone and two iPod touches plus various OS's his pc has caused the only issues) so the settings are optimised to it. After years of being annoyed by it we just yesterday got around to ordering a replacement card for it.

When I got my iPod touch 2, I had all sorts of issues with the wifi after having none with the ipod1. I sent it back to Apple only to have the same issues with the next one. After months of frustration Apple finally issued a software update and all the issues disappeared so I no longer take their software for granted as not being the cause!

However, the husband's iPad 2 has been working great, he uses it constantly mostly for streaming radio, podcasts and streaming shows from his desktop or my laptop. Using air video to stream video from his PC he did have a hiccup connecting to his pc (but not my laptop, nor did I have a problem connecting to his desktop from my ipad1) which we solved by using the air video software server's capability to use a pin and ip, but if the issue was router based he should have problems with the general wifi, streaming radio etc. and he doesn't.

You could try assigning your ipad2 a reserved ip in the router and see if that helps. Under advanced, dhcp server, dhcp on with a range of ips. My range is 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. Then reserved ip list, add your ipad's MAC which you find in the ipads settings and assign an ip within your range. Like I have my pap2 telephone Internet adapter assigned a reserved ip. (192.168.1.22) or for port forwarding in the past I've also had our computers ip's assigned the same way and I also needed to let our first iPod touch through our old router's (not this model) firewall using that method. These days only the pap2 is static. Can't hurt to try.

I have the same issue with TP-Link TL-WA5110G. I had to set the mode to 802.11b only on the AP to get my iPad2 to connect.

I've found my iOS devices can struggle with some older security protocols on certain types of routers and WAPs, but they work fine with WPA2.
