i was reading this article and it says the iphone can be upgraded to 3g with a software upgrade:

and what kind of 3g would it be? wcdma? hsdpa? 2100mhz/850mhz/1900mhz hsdpa or support all mhz?

and would this mean video calling would be possible? does the iphone have a camera for video calling?

The thing was "announced". The reason for the announcement is because the iPhone has not been approved by the FCC yet, so Apple wanted to disclose the whole thing with a big bang before people found out through the FCC papers.

Actually, until the FCC approves the iPhone there's no way this will be in the stores. So until then, please hold your horses. Too much hype for something that's not even in the production lines yet...

Also the subject in this thread is "iphone that works with vodafone", but as you state there is no indication of what band or system, so really no one really knows if it will work with Vodafone. What if it's only upgradeable to HSDPA 850 MHz which is not currently available here? Get my point?

There's no substantial information anywhere, except for hype...

iPhone is the first phone from Apple, which has been designed and manufactured by themselves if I am right.
Why they would pack everything into one phone if it will not be a success? To loose a lot of money?
No. They will measure the success of the first release, sell 10 million and more and then introduce Apple iPhone 2.0 with 3G and sell another 10-20-100 millions. Maybe after they will introduce 3.0 with built in GPS and sell even more. That's a good business strategy.

And if you saw the photos, there is no front camera for video calling. So even if the rumours are true (which I totally deny) and the 3G can be enabled by sw update, there will not be video calling cause no supporting hardware inside.

Maybe it does have a 3G radio inside ready to be enabled.. That would explain the pathetic bettery life! ":-)

I'd wager it uses a SDR - which are mostly used in military radios. the price of SDR chipsets has probably not been attractive to most cellphone manufacturers but now developer kits are becoming affordable (US$700). With SDR software is used to define the frequency and modulations which are transceived.

stacey: it is certainly possible they could software upgrade from EDGE to HSDPA/3G/almost_anything with current technology, BUT it's all hype and speculation at best :-)
