I have a friend who is having 40 older people to a birthday party in a small gathering outside, and wants to play a playlist off his iPod, but needs something that can amplify the iPod volume to a reasonable level. He ideally wants to rent something and is based in Auckland.

Does he not have access to a stereo or home theater system that he can plug the iPod into?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Apparently not and doesn't think it would be loud enough for outside?

Anything with an AUX in will work.... lot of "boom boxes" have that.

Maybe contact a local DJ and borrow/rent an amp/speakers from them.

Love my JBL Charge for such situations :)

For the price of a rental, you'd be able to buy a decent iPod-capable speaker that'd do the job for outside, surely?

So it would seem. Anyone have a specific recommendation on what to buy? He may buy it and sell it afterward.

Not sure if this will be loud enough or not, but does put out a reasonable amount of volume http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/apple-computers/apple-accessories/portable-speakers/logitech-wireless-boombox.html

I have one of these and it works ok but not good at any sort of decent volume.

I suggest looking at hire options. I have used this company before.

That would be my pick. Loud enough to annoy the neighbours. Reasonable resale too I'd say.

Hi - just thought I'd add a wee mention to check that if he's going to buy a unit like those suggested, that he checks the compatibility with his iPod if wanting to use a 'dock' based system that is handy as it will also supply power to the iPod... these can be either designed for the older 30 pin connector or the newer lightning connector.

Bluetooth (if iPod touch), or 3.5mm stereo leads are other connection methods of course.

Cheers,
Mike

Can't go wrong with a Bose speaker set really - the volume is great and most are transportable too.

I have far too many speakers hanging around. If you're in Wellington you're welcome to borrow a pair that'll be suitable.
