This has just started....

I have an iMac, iPhone, iPad. Suddenly I cannot send mail from iphone or ipad.

The error message tells me my username/password are not correct.

Read a bunch of Forums - tried all suggested. Need some Kiwi ingenuity....

In desperation, I deleted the account and restarted / repowered and recreated the account - same error.

Triple checked all settings. No joy.

I have a similar email account that uses the same domain, pop3 and smtp settings. The only diff is the username and password. So, I know I have all details correct. Besides, i can send from the imac so i 'double-know' I'm correct.

Help gratefully accepted please.

More information required:

Is this ISP mail? Xtra, Orcon etc.? Which one?
What server settings are you currently using?
What ISP are you connecting the iPad and iPhone to? WiFi or 3G?

ISP = Orcon mail server
Settings - as per Orcon settings for Pop mail
Both iphone/pad are using Wifi (and failing), the iMac is using ethernet.

Hope this helps?

No - Slingshot.
But - the email address we have is 20+ yr old and Orcon bought wise.net.net years ago and so our email addresses go through there. We have six wise.net addresses and all work fine and have done for years. However, just last week just ONE EMAIL ADDRESS sent from wife's iphone/pad fails from home. Her other one's work ok.

I can send ok from my iphone too.

FIVE HOURS LATER................yell

So I called Orcon, who said the issue was with Slingshot who said the issue was with Orcon, who said.......

I honestly went back and forth three times between each - that's six calls and three hours. Nobody would put their hand up and take the blame or offer to dig down and really find out what the problem was.

My three email addresses have been with Orcon for over 20 years and despite me changing to Sshot a few years ago, there have been no changes to POP or smtp detail. All has worked flawlessly until last weekend.

Eventually I was persuaded into having to call Apple as I was told the issue was with my device.

Now to repeat my initial statement - that i have three email addresses with all the same settings, excepting the username and password. That all work find on both a PC and an iMac. That two addresses work fine on ipad/iphone either wireless or 3G. It's just the one address that suddenly stopped sending mail - It can receive.

Also, I can log into the Orcon webmail and send/receive ok.

Apple asked me to do a bunch of stuff before FINDING A RESOLVE. This, proof the devices are fine; it's a mail server issue I believe.

It was a work-around, rather than a fix. I still don't have a fix, as neither Orcon or Shot will look into this at depth.

The RESOLVE [work-around] is for me to have Shot's smtp settings WITH my Sshot username+password. This works.

So now the three accounts have the same POP settings. Two have the same smtp setting and one has a different smtp setting.

I'm documenting this here in case anyone ever has a similar issue. However, i doubt this as it's unusual to have your POP mail with one provider and smtp with another provider.

For those that responded above - many thanks guys.

This is not unusual - a number of ISPs block port 25 (SMTP) out of their network as a way of preventing their network being a source of spam. This means you have to either use SSL back to the original provider, or use an SMTP server on the network (ISP) you are connected to.

However, that doesn't explain why one account can use an external server and the second account can't.

Any differences in SSL settings between accounts? Is authentication required for the SMTP server?

Time to move to an IMAP account, Gmail et al.
