Basically dropped the iPhone 6 today with a skin on it (that'll teach me for being all trendy and minimalist without a case) which has left a small dent just behind the mute switch. (glad I had a tempered glass protector on the front as well otherwise I may have had a smashed screen as well)

Now when I move the mute switch to the on position there is more Resistance and hence more force needed to mute the phone.
Has anyone had an iPhone 6 aluminium back repaired or replaced? Can I get this done at any old repair store or should I go via apple?

My main concern is that the increased friction on the switch will cause it (the switch) to become broken eventually and need to be replaced anyway.

Replacing the back requires taking every small part and sawpping it over to the new frame this can be expensive.

As Apple don't sell replacement parts the best your going to get is a 3rd party frame - these vary greatly in quality.

The mute assembly on the 6 is quite fragile so it is possible that it will break in time.

With an out of warranty replacement around $500 it may be better just to live with the sticky mute switch for a while.

Whatever you do, please do yourself a favour and try talking to Apple first and see what they can do for you. You might get lucky.

Thanks for the advice, might give apple a ring tomorrow to see if they offer an official repair or replacement service (for a fee lol).

I smashed the screen last week accidentily after the dog knocked the phone out my hands whilst on a walk.
Called apple, arranged a courier pack to be mailed to me, it arrived within 2 days.
Dutifully dropped the packaged phone off to nzcouriers who are the tnt agent here in palmy to be sent off, this tuesday at lunchtime.
Fast forward to today, 3 and a half days later, the supplied tracking details have not been entered into the tnt or nzcourier system. Rang tnt who state the details should be entered by the end of today at the latest!

Wow, really really poor service by either nzcouriers or tnt, didnt realize it takes more than 3 days and counting for a package to be sent 6 hours up the island.
Needless to say not imoressed.

Oh how I know your woes

Most curriers in NZ seem to be useless muppets. But TNT is up there with the best useless muppets.

Lately Apple have been using DHL for things here, so might luck out on that (or not, they are muppets too.. but lets not get into that)

interestingly, putting the number into the NZcouriers tracking now shows mine has been ready for overnight courier since 5pm on Tuesday, with nothing updates since then.
TNT still shows "not found" on their site.
Here's hoping something happens before Christmas

And after a week of no updates and NZcouriers saying last week the phone had been sent, a phonecall to TNT reveals that the package has gone missing. It hasn't been received at TNT Auckland nor has it been scanned into the NZcouriers auckland branch. TNT are now investigating and have NZcouriers searching their warehouses for it and I may hear something later.

I wonder what happens from here in that I had paid for the repair via Apple, and the package (at this stage) has gone missing on its way to them.

Should be insured, might just get a new phone out of it :)

I bough a apple keyboard off trademe a few years ago, courier delivered to wrong address, i never got it. They reimbursed me what I paid for the keyboard.

Sorry to hear of your experience. You should be okay in the end as you should be covered by insurance.

Forgot to add that I became so angry with my recently experience with TNT and NZC that I ended up writing a pretty firm but polite message on TNT's Facebook wall. In the end, TNT NZ followed up within a day and promised to investigate. When I received my phone back from Apple, it was delivered by NZC using Saturday delivery. I doubt that was a coincident. A couple of weeks after the phone arrived, TNT rang back and basically admitted that NZC screwed up my phone's initial collection (along with the delivery of the blank box from Apple) in every way imaginable.

From experience, both TNT and NZC are slow to do anything unless you complain. Put something on their Facebook page (search for TNT - The People Network) and contact Apple.

Hopefully you end up with a replacement phone at no cost for the hassle. Even if it is a refurbed. Apple stores in the US apparently have been known to swaps a new damaged phone instore at no cost, which sounds like great service.

The tnt csr was going to look into things today as no one had started to yesterday grrrrr. Tnt also apparently have an apple team that it is being referred to as well.
My plan is to badger them once a day for an update as to whats going on with it.
Needless to say im pretty pissed, im out for the phone at this stage and the $500 for the repair on the phone as it was being sent for repair. The optimistic side of me is hoping that i get a replacement phone and a refund for the repair as it never took place, but one can hope.

Thanks for the headsup on the facebook thing, might do that later this week depending on whether they have done anything about the missing oackage.

And a phonecall from TNT today to say the consignment has been lost. This has been forwarded to Apple who will now contact within a few days to inform me whats to happen.
Fortunately I was in DSE to day and got a iphone 5 64gb to hold me over till I get a new 6 from apple. Nice price too $520

Goodness me, this is pretty pathetic even by TNT and NZC's lowly standards. I suspect Apple will come to the party and just offer you a replacement phone for the money that you have already given them. But I wouldn't wait for Apple to make contact -- ring them up, quote your repair number and make clear that you're very disappointed by how their selected logistics agent let you and Apple down so no one at Apple gets tempted to take the easy way out on you.

Let us know how you get on.
