t's a slow news day, and this is something vaguely interesting to report on. Someone is going to win nicely because the shares have gotten a little cheaper meaning they can buy them up at a discount in the days before the markets. When the company announces it usual stupendous sales results for Q4, shares will go up and someone will make a nice gain on paper value, which they quietly sell off for a short profit return. Easy as when markets are distracted.

Gone from what?
Gone from thin air to thin air.
It's only paper value.
Although Apple do have lots of cash stashed away somewhere :)

I love my IPhone 6S (and have had an IPhone since the 4, upgraded to a 5, then to a 6 and then to the 6S) and also have an Ipad Air 2 and an Ipad 3 that I have given away. In addition, I have a 2011 MacBook Air. I am an Apple fan insofar as the mobile software and hardware goes. The MacBook Air I mainly bought because my (then) work paid for it and plus I was very keen on a reasonably thin and light laptop. But I wouldn't have bought it with my own money.

In general, for non-mobile hardware, Apple's stuff tend to be extremely overpriced and under-performing relative to the competition IMO. I also don't get why people rave endlessly about OS X. I don't particularly love Windows but I just don't see OS X as being light years better, as most Apple fanbois would have people believe.

Personally, I just about can't stand most Apple-centric forums. The likes of Macrumors have a core of misinformed, idiotic, and frankly borderline psychotic idiots whose sole mission in life appears to defend every little decision by Apple. On the issue of the DoJ victory over Apple in relation to the E-books price fixing (for example), notwithstanding two courts ruling that Apple had engaged in price-fixing (and as a former practising lawyer with an IP/competition law background I found both decisions to be impeccably reached), many of those users continue to insist that the judges concerned were bribed or corrupt.

Using Apple hardware/software generally gives me a lot of pleasure and makes my life a lot easier. Putting up with some of Apple's bizarre/over-zealous design philosophies, along with being associated with the typical fanbois, definitely do not appeal.

The financial markets are the play ground of demented reef fish, they panic if someone drops a pen or gets wind.

I agree, but 20%? Thats past the optimistic buyer vs the pessimistic seller. It seems more ingrained

Your similar to me, although I see MR as well populated with Apple lovers who have no issue with criticism.

There are three types of computer buyer:

1.) Tinkerers - which probably covers most people on this forum.
2.) Lower income people with moderate or limited technical ability.
3.) Higher income people with moderate or limited technical ability.

Apple have (3) completely sown up - they have no credible competition in that market. I would therefore expect their earnings to be reasonable stable over the long term, although it's possible that they have been overvalued for a while and this is just a natural correction.

I would not read much into this, share price does not always equal company performance. Apple are a very cash rich company they can change direction instantly (in business terms).

What sort of commentary are you looking for with the post? Im not sure I can see the question in the OP

Tech has had a big run up on the Nasdaq
Some are locking in their paper profits
Interest rates are moving up over here
Meanwhile crude oil is at a 11 year low.

I see it as more a reflection on what the general public, and corporate investors think of Apple's future. Will the future be great or will it be adequate?

Another article covering smartphone sales peaking.  http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/75203880/iphone-7-could-be-last-big-upgrade

The iPhone is Apple, their eggs are in one iPhone basket
I'm surprised of words such as "blockbuster upgrades" in favour of modest upgrades. I feel they are all modest upgrades, or catchups

Given Apple's size, iconic brand, its newsworthy that the public is dropping the value of the company. 20% is huge. Apple has the broadest range of shareholders in the US I believe. So, its across the board. MSFT is up.

there has been talk of Apples demise since the Lazarus act when Steve Jobs returned. Next year Apple will bring out iPhone 7 and it will be a runaway success and those who goggled up the reef fish sales of shares will have a tidy nest egg gain.

The share price is still above the January 2015 level and circa 35 points more than this time last year, 40 points more than Dec 2013 and double the 2012 value.

Love my Macbook Pro, but as an Android phone / Linux desktop user I probably don't qualify as a fanboy. I'm looking at the graph and the price seems to be back at around the September level, so perhaps not as dramatic as the headline suggests.

I wonder if we are almost getting to the point where smartphones are now like desktops and tablets - no real need to upgrade every 1-2 years if it isn't broken. The iPhone 6 / 6 Plus was a big step up from previous models, but will we be able to say the same about the next model and the one after that?
