Hey guys

My iPhone is running on VFNZ Prepay network. Anyway I noticed that my last topup disappeared a little faster than usual so I rang up VFNZ and the guy told me that I had used $3.00 of WAP/internet usage in the last week. This is strange as I can never get on the internet unless i'm on wifi and my APN settings are blank.

I asked him if he could block this at his end but no of course thats too hard. Any suggestions?

You don't need a APN to use data while in your home country! If the APN field is blank it will connect to the default which is www.vodafone.net.nz

In the APN field put something that is incorrect!

So if I want to disable it I should enter some junk into the APN field?

correct like abc.co.nz

This should stop it if not you need to stop the application on the iphone that is using packet data!

If I was you find out what is connecting to the packet data network and stop it!

John

I use BossPrefs (available from Installer) to disable Edge. That way I don't have to stuff around changing APN values when I do want to use it.

hey guys,
If you ring Voda. Ask them to disable GPRS. (Assuming you're not using PXT, which clearly you aren't if you are changing the APN)

So yeah, they can do it straight away, I had the same thing happen, (only im on contract, but i also did it with my Prepay too)

Hope this helps.

spazz: Bossprefs is a sweet app.

Agreed, however I spose it depends on how you prefer it. (disabled at Vodafones end, or at your end)

I found disabling it at Vodafones end only leaves them liable if anything goes wrong. Im one of those people who don't like having to alter files (I assume this is what Bossprefs  does without digging around about it). so if modifying a file isn't completely nessisary then i prefer the other option.

But I do agree, it is a great tool (I use it for disabling/enabling SSH)

Have had BossPrefs (love it) for a while and always had edge disabled. Still got this though. Hopefully now that I put a bogus address under the APN field I won't have this problem anymore.

You don't like having to alter files or you don't like having files altered for you?

Surely it's the first? Tongue out  Otherwise you must be sitting there with an iPhone that doesn't even have functioning Caller ID ...

Anyway, I believe BossPrefs sends an unload command via launchctl and disables the launch daemon for Edge. Then does the opposite to reinstate.

As for doing this through Vodafone... where does this leave you if you ~do~ want to use GPRS? Sorry, your suggestion is valid but probably only for a minority and is a bit excessive in my opinion when there are far simpler and more flexible options available.

Haha, understood. Na, actually, you're right, I don't like having to modifying files.
But I do have Caller ID working etc ;) Thanks to you of course. haha.

I do agree it is easy, and yeah you can ring to have it activated, I spose its up to you, just thought I would provide another option, as ive seem people assume that Bossprefs has caused problems with the iPhone (Whether they were to blame in the end, i don't know).

Oh and thanks for that, good knowledge to have.

Regards,
Aaron

Hehehe - as I said, valid suggestion and very handy to know - but Im one of those people who likes editing files a bit too much Tongue out

It does raise an interesting question though if BossPrefs is not working as expected... it appears to work fine for me but sometimes I can't tell because I rebuild my phone fairly regularly and often forget to install BossPrefs and deactivate Edge. So I'm not surprised when I see some data charges :P
