I've switched to Android for a while. The iPhone 7 was too dull and I fancied a change.
My iPhone 6 is backed up to iCloud. If I buy an iPhone 8 in October next year - assuming that is the launch date due to 10th anniversary etc - will my iPhone 6 backup still be there to restore apps etc from if I want to?

Why not do a local computer iPhone backup (with encryption turned on, you'll be thankful for this as it keeps all sensitive information, like SSIDs, passwords etc).

Once you've back it up, you can go to Preferences > Devices > right-click on the list item of the backups, and find where they located. Copy the backup to a safe place. When restoring, you can do key-modifier restore or something (sorry don't have the key sequence in mind handy), to find the backup to restore from.
