And before you Pro-Vodafone bullies get all over me and tell me about its my choice and how I should lump it take a moment and let me talk.

I have had my iphone for about 6 months now and everything was fine until I decided to change my on account from one to another.. since then about 2 months ago I have been getting charged an average of about 60 dollars of GPRS on my invoice each month.

I could go into great depth about how Vodafone customer services treated me like a 2^nd class citizen , Lied and even adjusted my account details with out permission! However this is not the reason im posting this msg.

Im looking on a definitive answer to stop this GPRS over charging by Vodafone.. unautorised phone or not, Im not using GPRS I have not asked to have a GPRS enabled account so in my own opinion im doing no wrong.

I would like to thank you in advance for any help offered.

Put your SIM in an approved handset for a month and see what happens...

I am not a pro-Voda bully, but if your iPhone is using data, its your issue, not Vodafones.

well I had the same sim in the same phone for 3 prior months without being charged.. so whats changed now?

Im not pro Vodafone ither.. but if they are charging me for there service i expect to have help in resolving any issues i have with that service.
Supported phone or not if they are willing to make money off it then like it or not they are supporting it on there network.

Have you installed an app thats using data? Does the data usage stop when you use a different handset? If you factory reset your handset do you get the same issues?

No to the App using data I went for a whole month not using the apps and still was charged GPRS usage.
As for the phone reset / trying a diff phone i havent done ither because i have found out what is costing me.
For every txt msg i sent im being charged about 5 - 10 cents of GPRS fees. each time i send a txt my
"edge" usage increases and from what i have read Vodafone cannot determin between Edge and GPRS.. so they charge
anyway.

Man im just so frustrated because its like im a bad person for having an imported phone and it shouldnt be like that like i said above if vodafone accepts money from me while im using my iphone they are accepting that handset on there network. thus it should be supported.. if they really wanted to bann certian handsets they could.. they just choose not to so they can rip people off.

Actually if you want somthing to think about, for 3 months i had my iphone i wasnt charged any gprs.
When i upgraded my plan i was asked what handset i used.
Since then i have had the extra fees added to my account each month because of the overcharging of sms.

A, are they targeting iphone users?
B, Is there a plan error?

webznz I think your being a bit over the top, my iphone is running sweet and I'm pretty sure some apps are running in the background updating that would most likely be using gprs e.g. weather and stocks that I can't be bothered getting rid of.

Vodafone can't determine between edge and grps because edge doesn't exist on the vodafone nz network!
Think of it this way from lowest speed to highest data speeds; gprs -> edge -> 3G -> 3G+
VFNZ doesn't have an edge network so it will scale back to gprs.

What does the usage meter say on your iphone...test it out for a couple of days and compare to www.vodafone.co.nz/myvodafone, does it match?

BUT... you did say you changed plans so maybe their is a co-incidence there, you may have had a data plan on your old account that didn't transfer to your new plan?...

In terms of you having an iphone it makes no difference, really... they can't deny you service for using an un-authorised phone, that would be plain ridiculous, they just won't be helpful if you went into a retail store.

On top of the previous comments about mikal's iPhone...

First were you on a prepay plan or on account? Until this month Vodafone wasn't charging for data on prepay if your balance was zero. But now they are because they changed their billing system. This is not for iPhone only, this is across the board.

Vodafone charges for what's used. As commented before, are you absolutely sure the built-in applications are not updating in the background? Weather, stocks, etc?

Also, think of the iPhone as a computer. Like a computer, many things are running in the background. If you have installed any third party applications, make sure they are not using data without you knowing. Check their websites for more information.

If you use data for anything (hey, there's a Safari browser there, are you sure you haven't tried it ever?) you should have a data plan. Casual data is very expensive and without a data plan you will be charged for usage - and rightly so.

If you absolutely don't use data on your iPhone, then follow instructions found somewhere else in this forum to change the APN to an invalid name. Invalid APNs won't connect and your phone won't use ANY data.

And there's no Vodafone conspiracy against iPhone or any phone.

From what you have said, a device you own, that you know is not supported, and further from that is actually designed to work on a different network, and must be hacked to work on Vodafones, via software methods to jailbreak, unlock and activate, that the manufacturer does not approve, is using data exactly how it was designed to do.

Its obviously meant to do what its doing in some way, but of course Vodafones network is not designed to cope with it. You hacked to phone up to get it away from its home network, and onto Vodafone.

You should be trying to find the cause and its solution within the iPhone community.

This is so not a Vodafone New Zealand problem, and there is no way they could help you (unless they sent a technician to reset your iPhone to factory settings, and go through the jailbreaking, unlocking, and activation process in a Vodafone approved way.... oh wait - of course......)

The Vodafone network is purely doing what you are asking it to do.

Anyone here will tell you I am not a Pro-Voda fanboy, so bear this in mind, take some advice, and try and sort your iPhone out - because that is clearly where the issue lies.

As much as you want it to be Vodafones problem, its just does not appear to be.
You are putting up your walls because we dont agree with your point of view, despite my advice to seek the help of the iPhone community on here. You are possibly so close to the answer, and getting it sorted, but you are walking away?

You think there is no neutral opinion here? I have worked under Telecom / Orb / Gen-i for about 5 years until last month, my partner still does, even longer than that. I am pro Telecom in most ways, and have not had the most brilliant experiences with Vodafone.

But credit where credits due, read my last post carefully - you have a handset that needs hacking out of its home network, that needs activation cracking, that needs unlocking. The thing is not designed to work off AT&Ts network!! How is that a Vodafone issue?

Its a handset issue. Focus on that, be nice, ask for help, and you might succeed.

You say you are doing no wrong, and want a definitive answer - here is your definitive answer:

You are doing wrong (well, your handset appears to be anyway), and you need to get that sorted. Its a problem with your handset, not the Vodafone network. The Vodafone network appears to be working as expected.

Tony, the SMS/GPRS topic was discussed in the forums before and the iPhone users around here have found different solutions. Unfortunately webznz was rude and banned. If he needs help he will have to find somewhere else.
