The bluetooth icon at the top of the screen is lit-up as it if is connected to a device even when it isn't. It used to be dull when bluetooth was turned on but not connected, and lit up only when connected. Now it's lit up all the time.

It is like this on my iPhone 7, iPad Air 2, and my partners iPhone 6 Plus.

Do you have “location services” set to “always” for anything?

IOS is great to give granular control for apps that all seem to want access to ‘everything’ in Android.

I have only my Tile app and currently a ‘health’ mindfulness app that have access to ‘always’...

I do, but even if I completely turn off location services the bluetooth icon stays lit up.

And nothing shows connected in the Bluetooth menu?

Apple Watch maybe?

Nope, nothing.

Googling has found others with this issue. I'm trying to determine if it is across the board and most just haven't noticed, or if it is not that common.

Apparently it’s not a ‘bug’ But a feature 🙄

My BT Icon (iPhone7, iOS 11.01) is lit up now too.

Nothing connected either. It is obviously by design.

The whole Control Centre not actually turning off wifi or bluetooth is a "feature", but is really a different issue. I am not wanting to turn bluetooth off.

EDIT: Many of these articles are lumping two separate issues together.

Same for me iOS 11.01 - icon disappears if BT off, but flashes as though connecting when turning BT back on, then goes solid on as though connected to something (it isn't).

Same here. Possibly related to the change in the control centre Bluetooth control which says it turns it off but actually doesn’t?

Seems like a completely different issue to me, but who knows?

This changed with iOS 11.  Why?  I have no idea.  I have no idea if my car bluetooth is connected as like you say, the icon is always black (not grey) regardless if something is connected or not.  Headphones show the headphone icon with it which is handy but other devices like my car's bluetooth don't.  I feel this is a bug as it makes no logical sense why apple would do this when previously it worked as anything else would.

Icon grey = nothing connected.

Icon black - somethings connected.

When my headphones connect I get a small headphones icon that shows up. Does this happen with other Bluetooth devices? Just wondering if the active icon has simply been replaced with additional icons that show up when connected. Could explain why the greyed out Bluetooth icon has gone.
