Has anyone tried updating their unlocked iPhone 2.5G to see if it will work?

I've just been wondering if 2.0 unlocks the phones? Now that you can't get out of the store without signing away about $2K+ of your money it seems redundant to have the phones locked down too.

So has anyone tried it yet?

I've seen a few 2.0 to 1.1.4 downgrade instructions.... so now I'm tempted to try it.

Yeah... but they have locked us into using on Account. So it's not technically correct. There are many variables. You could be on an account and just coming to a 12/24 months of your contract... then you could get it outright and only pay $979, but then you've got to keep paying $50/month or what ever... it comes out as less than $2K.

But for example the only person I know was on an account spending about $150/month... for the last 9 months... he had to pay $599 + some early resign fee ($150?) + sign up for 24 months of $130. So this comes out to $3869.

As I said you could come out better off dependent on your current situation (that's why I said about $2K, it could be much more)... but Vodafone is really milking for what we are worth by charging us for the privilege of changing our plans and signing our life away to them for the next 2 years.

So you are saying the person was already spending $150 consistently for last 9 months, Vodafone let them resign early (albeit for a fee), and the new monthly commitment is less than what they have been historically paying?

So net result is iPhone cost $599 + $150 re-sign = $749, and he possible pays less per month than before.

If thats the case, you cant imply the cost of the iPhone to this person was $3869, its more like $749 minus $480 (if their bill drops by $20 a month) equals a $269 iPhone.

Vodafone has indeed lost the plot overall, but in this case, you friends net cost over 24 months appears to be $269 over and above what they were going to pay if they did not buy an iPhone. (over a 24 month period).

How is this particular scenario bad?

Yes... the plan is cheaper than it was before. Awesome... this is the same logic Vodafone is using. "Our new plans are great value because we're not shafting you quite as much as we were before"

So yes it's going to work out a little better than the ridiculous plan he was on, but seriously how long do you think Vodafone could keep on charging ~$20 for 15MB of data that he was on before.

You're also not taking into account that he is now on a fresh 24 month contract.

I actually don't understand how anyone is a Vodafone apologist after this launch.

The thing that people are so upset about isn't that the new iPhone is a bad deal compared to old Vodafone pricing. It's an incredibly good deal. But because the iPhone is an attention grabbing international launch it highlights how badly we've been getting screwed all this time.

All around the world people are getting great deals on voice and data plans... we however are stuck in the dark ages with monopolistic telecommunications companies. The entire way that we us our phones is different to other countries (we text most of the time) because we don't have proper competition.
