With the prospect of a pitiful monthly data allowance and with push email (and other things being kept in sync) I was wondering if there was some way to get the iphone to only download text from emails and to leave any attachments, including logos and large images, behind to download only on the computer with its generous monthly allowance.

Are the attachments treated as part of the data allowance or separate?

(I don't have an iphone yet - and have never experienced downloading email on a cellphone - but I am weighing up some options)

If they are downloaded through the Vodafone's mobile network they will be counted - anything actually that goes through the their network regardless of content or type will be counted.

From a windows mobile and blackberry perspective, push email (including contact/calender over the air sync) does not use a lot of data.

But it all comes down to your sync preferences and how much kb of a message you want to push out. You'll want to see if the iphone has any settings for that.

I haven't used a Iphone myself, I'd say that the plans that vodafone provide are sufficient for push email. You may need to adjust how much of a message you initially pull down, including the attachments as this will use the most data if set too high. On windows mobile, I've used somewhere around 5-20kb so that you can read most of the message

On windows mobile, I found that 200mb was generally overkill for push email and rarely hit 100mb even with average browsing on it. On blackberry, the data usage was even lower and I found that for the first couple of months I used less than 15mb... thats increased as I use it more heavily on both the email and web front, but I'm still using only around 22mb a month (BES, 5 BIS accounts, the odd downloads, a lot of browsing, even did very light video streaming).

Don't Blackberry servers process the pages first before sending them down to your phone?

200MB should be fine for just emailing and simple surfing on the iPhone. I don't think you can filter out objects, but attachments/ attached images are only downloaded when you press a download button in the email.

Correct, they employ several techniques to ensure that you use only the data you need. One of them is heavy compression of data.

Going back to the topic at hand, perhaps you could set the iphone to sync only the folders you need, with filters on the server end? Just a thought...
