I have an iPhone 3GS which has a flaky on/off button. Before I dump it I want to transfer my contacts to a medium so that I can load them on my next phone which will not be an iPhone. In theory I should be able to store contacts on the Vodafone SIM card but I can not find a way to do so. All contacts are in the phone's internal storage. I proved this by removing the SIM card and restarting the phone without the card

Can anyone offer a suggestion.

Are they stored automatically in iCloud (or whatever email provider’s contact platform you use)?

I'm not an iPhone user, but I'm assuming you can move contacts from the device to an email account, so sign up for Gmail or Outlook.com and move them to there. You've then got them available across multiple platforms independent of device.

I don't have an iCloud account, the phone is for occasional contacts in emergencies, not for daily use. I can not find an export option.

You can't export contacts to a SIM in iOS, you can only import contacts from a SIM. Likely the easiest option for you, given the 3GS will be on an old version of iOS and you aren't moving to iOS, is to manually create the contacts on a new device.

Other option is to login to iCloud, and turn on Contacts. This will sync your contacts to iCloud. Then you need to find a computer, preferably a Mac and add that iCloud account to the Contacts app. Then you can export the contacts to a format that can be imported on other devices.

Could also do this on Windows but it won't be as simple. There's info online about how to do this. Then there's some older apps like PhoneView that will pull the data off your iOS device, but that's pretty old and may not be around anymore.

It looks like you need to set up iCloud account to export.

Just set up temporary one and sync contacts with it.

For Gmail and can probably be done same way with others

There were/are apps that can export contacts as Csv or Vcard, but the problem will be that your 3gs is running ios6, so its likely anything in the app store is not going to be compatible....

This app claims to do what you want, but is Ios8+, :(

You are trying to get things out of Apple's walled garden, so its not going to be straight forward...
