I just downloaded a very cool app for my iPhone, Shazam, if you do not have it yet, I suggest you get it.
Basically, you can hold your iPhone up to a speaker that is playing music and the App will look through a DB of 5million+ tracks and match the music to the artist, album and track name, then you can buy the track straight away via iTunes, now thats cool IMO.

I think Midomi can do something similar, but I haven't tried it. It is at least available in the NZ app store.

Didn't Telecom used to have or currently have (?) a similar thing where you could phone a number on your mobile and do the same thing? ie. put the phone up to a speaker and get the song details.

Yes, they did. But it wasn't "cool" enough for people to use.

I wrote before - a lot of "new" stuff is actually stuff we've seen before. I've noticed lots of "new" services around that we (the team I worked with) implemented for telcos back in 2000. But now they are cool. People's perceptions change.

I don't recall the details but you wrote something about "quick chat".

I just don't see that ever taking off, but I guess it was one way to get around no SMS on the network :D

On another note, do the Telecom "Minicall" pagers still work?

That is one service Telecom launched when they did not have SMS. I am talking about other stuff, such as "click-to-call" where small applets on websites would connect people using VoIP directly to companies, friends, etc. I worked on a project for that back in 2000. Now you hear about companies like Jahjah and so on. But the technology was actually out there years ago.
