Since the 3g iphone is official in nz, does this mean it doesnt need any unlocking to be used on prepay after its been jailbroken with winpwn?

it doesn't need unlocking to use a prepay card even when NOT jailbroken.

so the guys on trademe that say its unlocked by vodafone to use on prepay are wrong? So if i order a 3g online from vodafone, it will work fine?

The day after I bought my 3G I took it to work and activated it online for use with my contact sim.

I then took out my sim, and put in a friends prepay sim and made a call.

The iPhone is not locked in New Zealand. You will need to change the APN settings to access mobile data if you don't have an iPhone plan.

so just to confirm.
I order my 3g iphone from vodafone website at the full price without any plan. It comes in three days. I open it, put in my prepay sim card, and what does it do? Does it need any activating, or will it work straight out of the box? Sorry, just dont want to end up with a $1200 dud.

Once your simcard is in the phone and you turn it on it will ask you to connect the phone to your computer and open iTunes.
iTunes will then walk you through the activation process (which takes no time at all) which will then allow you to use the phone.

Because you are using a prepaid simcard only Voice and TXT will work to start with, to get data working refer to freitasm's post above
