ok I've currently got an iPhone 4s - it was my wife's old phone and it works ok, but the wife has managed to score a used iPhone 6 or 6s - all the managers at her work upgraded and they offered their old phones to staff - so that's my Xmas present

Anyway the phone has been factory reset so it's all ok and apparently has 82% battery left

My question is, if I take the sim out of my 4s and put it into the newer 6 or 6s - will all the contacts...etc... just transfer straight over to the new phone?

wife said they should, but I just want to be sure.

Also do the apps automatically transfer over too? I play that 4 pictures 1 word game (it's the only game I play) and I'm up to level 5649 - I'd be gutted if I had to restart that from the beginning.

I'll be taking it to a Vodafone shop to get them to remove / replace the sim card, but just wanted to know if everything will transfer over ok?

Everything - including apps, photos, contacts etc - should move over if you are signed in with icloud and have completed a backup. Then on your 6 just restore from icloud backup and voila :)

iPhone not an I-Phone (I know I'm being pedantic but getting it right means people who search for this kind of question later will find what they need).

You need to check whether the SIM will fit in the iPhone 6. I can't recall when that moved to nanosim form factor, but if it doesn't fit all you need to do is go into your telco store and get them to do a sim swap.

You shouldn't have contacts stored on your SIM. They should be stored in iCloud. Once they're in iCloud all you need to do is log out of iCloud on the old phone, log in on the new one, and all your contacts will show up.

Make sure iMessage is disabled on your old phone before you set up your new one (and Find My iPhone), otherwise iMessages will continue to be sent to the old phone.

I know we have an iCloud account, but don't recall having to use it

You could just back up the existing phone through iTunes. Then when you plug in the new phone select the option to restore it from the backup file. Everything that is compatable with the new phone will be uploaded including contacts, photos etc it really is super easy . You may need to visit a shop to do a sim swap, I am pretty sure the Sim cards are different sizes. Again a simple enough task in store.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I would just use the itunes facility.

I agree with this; doing it with iTunes will copy everything, whereas iCloud is a bit more limited (e.g. it won't copy any music unless you bought it from Apple).

ok thanks for all the replies

I've managed to do a backup of the 4s and have loaded / transferred that on to the newer iPhone 6, so all good there

but the problem is - it's coming up with an old apple ID asking me to enter the password - and that apple id does not exist anymore because it was with our old ihug e-mail address. We have changed the apple ID with apple and on the mackbook and on my wifes phone it has the new apple id (with our current gmail address) but I can't get rid of the old apple ID on my phone and therefore I cannot sign into apple anything so finish setting up the phone.

Also in settings the phone comes up with her initials and her name with our old e-mail address underneath and as much as I love my wife I'd like to change that to my name / initials!

I'm going to take the phone to vodafone to get the sim card switched over, and I'll ask them if they know how to change the apple id and name on the phone, but I thought I'd see if anyone here knows or has any tips

If what is on the 6 does not match what is on the 4s then you restored the wrong backup because there should be no difference. Make sure the 4s was signed into the correct Apple ID.

Also, that batter will need to be replaced very soon. 80% is considered consumed so 82% is getting very close. At some stage it will probably come up that performance management has been enabled. It will cost you $85 plus whatever the service provider wants to charge to replace the battery.

yes it is the right back up because I had the exact same problem with the old 4s phone, but it didn't bother me because i never signed into apple on the 4s

I just thought with the 6s I would be able to change it easily... actually when I go into iTunes and App store, the correct Apple ID is showing..... it's just not showing at settings

The man at Vodafone changed the sim card over ok and said it was easy to change the apple id and just said to connect it to wifi and do it through settings..... but it just keeps on asking me for the password for the old apple ID - there's nowhere that I can find where I can change it

Do you see the option to sign out if you hit cancel when it asks for the password and then scroll down? If you see it and it lets you sign out without the password then you are fine and can just sign into iCloud with the correct ID. If you are asked for the password when you try and sign out then Find My iPhone has activated and you cannot sign out without the password and life gets a bit more tricky.

thanks - you're right... I can't turn off find my phone without apple password.

I'll have to go back to vodafone I think and ask them.... I didn't think this would be a major problem

from what I think I can glean from this thread, is that the iPhone 6 is still connected to your wife’s old Apple ID, which was an ihug email which has now been terminated. You can’t turn of find my iPhone without it, and I’m guessing none of the other alternate comms methods were setup (recovery email addresses, old phone number etc).

you need to open a case with Apple and hope they will help you. There’s no other way from here unless she can remember the password. If you have the mobile number from that time you might be able to get a recovery code texted to you.
