Hi guys,

Im awaiting to see if the iPhone will *actually* work on the Telecom network, As i brought my iPhone after Vodafone telling me ill get reception with no problems .. turns out i dont get any reception which is a bit of a shame..

Im running the 3.0 OS BETA on my iPhone but i notice under the "Carrier" settings i see

"Telecom NZ"

But when i try connect it says..

"Network Lost

Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in Settings."

Does that mean it would work? Or how could i connect my iPhone to the Telecom network?

I recommend you read my previous blog post about the networks first.

Now to the topic: the iPhone is a 850/2100 MHz WCDMA device, which means it will works just fine on Vodafone's current 2100 MHz WCDMA network (which is available in the main centres) and will work just fine on Telecom's 850 MHz WCDMA network as well.

Note the Telecom 850 MHz WCDMA is being deployed everywhere. Vodafone's 2100 MHz WCDMA is present in the main centres only.

No it won't work on Vodafone's new 900 MHz WCDMA network currently being deployed.

Yes, it means an iPhone on Telecom will have wider coverage than an iPhone on Vodafone (ironic, isn't it?)

Also the reason why it lists Telecom but won't work is probably because you have a Vodafone SIM card and there's no roaming agreement between those telcos so your phone sees the Telecom network but won't "connect" to it.

Note that all iPhone handsets sold through Vodafone New Zealand are not locked so you could just insert a Telecom SIM card when it becomes available in a few months.

Of course I am talking about WCDMA (UMTS) here. The iPhone is also a GSM/GPRS 900 MHz device but GSM (2G network) is not the same as WCDMA (3G network) in terms of data, speed and services available.

Thanks! it answered a few questions of mine, So if i got a telecom roaming sim would it still work the same?

As its pretty much $1200 sitting there which i cant use :(

The Telecom roaming SIMs are used for roaming only, not domestic usage.

When Telecom launches their new network in June you should be able to pick up a Telecom SIM and shouldn't have any problems using your iPhone

I do hope Telecom markets the iphone 3g since their network is more suited for it with nationwide 3g on the frequenices it supports

Based solely upon rumors and speculation you can assume that there will be new iPhones around June this year and again based soluely on rumors and speculation that there could be numerous models, 1 of which will support 900MHz UMTS and potentially another model that does 850MHz UMTS.

Telecom may have better support for the existing 3G iPhone but both will potentially have similair coverage for any new device(s) that may appears.

Just did a little test with a wcdma sim card and a 3g iphone and it worked no worries, calling and texting not a problem and ran the speed test app and got 1.2mbits down but only 100kb up. Not bad. I think I will be going down that path when it goes live as there is hardly any voda reception where I live.

I am 99% sure they will have it. I won't divulge my source, so I guess its up to you guys weather you believe a noob poster lol

Yeah I'm 99% sure too. June is what I've been hearing but we will see. One things for sure, vodafone will never get my money at the current pricing.
