i called into vodafone store to enquire about the iphone. i was told t get full use of all the applications  i needed to be on an iphone plan?. if i purchased an iphone would i be able to use its full fucntions on the vodafone prepay data plan or do i still need to be on an iphone plan?

You can be on Prepay and all will work fine. You will just have to change the APN configuration, and make sure you have a data plan - such as the $10/100MB a month plan, otherwise it will get more expensive then you want.

Yet again sales people fail and tell customers lies. There is no difference in what the phone can do if you have a prepaid or plan sim in the machine.
