Hi,

I am sure many will consider this a stupid qn... But I've gone to the groupthink for a response.  If I buy an Iphone 3GS overseas from a country where they are locked, can I unlock it to run in NZ on VFNZ, XT or 2degrees?

Regards,
Alexis

lol I think we are all too independent for groupthink to play a part ;)

Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. Individual creativity, uniqueness, and independent thinking are lost in the pursuit of group cohesiveness

If iPhone os 3.0 has been jailbroken & unlocked, the it should all be fine. But seeing as 3.0 hasn't been released yet...

in my opinion the answer would be no, that would not work. and who knows if yellowsnow will be possible on 3GS and how well it will work, how long it will take to come out etc.

pre-release versions of 3.0 have been cracked by the iphone dev team successfully meaning a future jailbreak/unlock is highly likely on release of full 3.0 software

note: unlocking is different to jail-breaking

the operators in Aussie unlock the phones for you so you can use them on any network, you just pay a small fee. Jail-breaking is when you crack the software - a whole different story

But when you aren't doing it the official way, unlocking requires jailbreaking. Unless something has changed?

unlocking and jailbreaking is confirmed working with the 3.0 build by the dev team

I would say that as its a new model of phone that may have the holes closed up, as what happened with the ipod touch v2, so just because the 3.0 software will be unlockable doesnt mean that will work on the 3GS

Exactly. 3GS is different hardware. The same sort of thing happened with the second-gen iPods; existing jailbreaks wouldn't work, even though those same JBs worked on the first-gen models with the same OS version.
