I don't believe there is an option to turn off EDGE/GPRS in the official 3.0 software. So what about changing the APN to a "fake" one? Does the software let you change the APN, and if so, when you change it to a dummy APN does Vodafone NZ still let you access data?

I'm pretty sure I read something here where someone had changed their APN to something "wrong" but the phone still found a way to access data (and charge for it).

I'd like to get upgraded to 3.0 but need to know my options for turning data on and off at will. Thanks.

I think you can jailbreak 3.0 on a first gen ok still there is an app cy bigboss that allows to to simply swith edge or data off as well as a bunch of other stuff i have updated to 3.0 on my first gen and not re jail broken it yet just a bit busy but will look into it over the next few days and see...

Ok it cost me some cents but hopefully this information saves you a few in return.

The default APN for Vodafone NZ in the 3.0 software is:

www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz

Contrary to what is logical, if you change this to ANYTHING (ie. make a fake/dummy APN), then you WILL connect and be charged casual data if you are on Prepay and not on an iPhone plan. I am unsure what happens if you are on 100Mb/month because I don't have this add-on.

Paradoxically, when I LEFT the APN as is, then I was unable to connect and there was a pop-up error message to this effect.

So if you have a 2G iPhone on Prepay, then just leave the default APN to BLOCK data, change it to something else (eg. remove the "z" from "nz") and you can then use data.

This applies to the 2G iPhone on Vodafone Prepay without any data plans (casual data $1/day on days used).

I am on a legacy Prepay plan (Motormouth).

Yes.. I have talked to some people in the know and yes the recent changes to vodafone's network will allow any INVALID APN to actually work.

Saying that if you use an APN you don't have access to will stop Data as it won't authenticate. hint blackberry

Wow! What's going on at Vodafone??

That response at the end by the staff member is highly typical of the arrogance with which they regard their customers in recent times!

And fancy criticising a business partner publically like that!

Who at Apple would like to know about comments like that? Suggestions as to where to email that response would be appreciated!!

Their definition of a "service" is BS. Being able to connect to data with a FAKE/INVALID APN is not a "service".

peteflynn - do you have a jailbreak? I am now using SBSettings and that blocks my data reliably it seems. It's probably the only certain way now.

Can I confirm, Pete, are you on a post-paid plan? It sounds like it is people on a post paid plan (rather than a pre-pay) haven't got the option to block data, whereas pre-pay phones can leave (or set) their APN to www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz to block data.
I have found that my 3G phone on a post-paid plan will receive data with the above APN, a mis-spelling of this APN, or a blank APN. I guess I'll try something with 'blackberry' in it next time I test it. Thanks Lennon...(any other clues...)

ps. I haven't jailbroken my phone, yet.

Mike - you will find that there are plans to allow Prepay access to the iphone APN also. I found this out the hard way the other day when the access appeared to be unlocked for 30-60min.

When I asked on the Vodafone forums I was told of imminent plans to open this up anyway.

Do you have a 1st Gen 2G only iPhone?

What MMS are you referring to? I thought the MMS update was for 3G phones only?

How does it work? Does it access data in order to send/receive? And can you only send it to other iPhone users?

I've never used an MMS (that's a PXT right?) and really can't see myself using it.

Not entirely sure how it works...I do know I very rarely have data enabled (ie I run a fake apn then delete the profile so as to disable data) and SwirlyMMS works fine. i can send pics and vids through it.

EDIT: I just disabled my edge through SBSettings and successfully sent a pxt (MMS) through SwirlyMMS, so yay for that.

Interesting. I have just gone on the 100mb for $10 a month addon to superprepay.
I have my iphone set to www.vodafone.net.nz seems ok.. I hope I am doing this right.

I have jailbroken my 2g is on 3.0 firmware and running SBSettings to turn edge off if I want and works like a treat.

So how does MMS work on swirly MMS ? is it easy to setup?
Do I need some additional settings to make it work on voda nz ?

so you can send an MMS with swirly can i receive them at all ?

any info would be greatly appreciated
