NZ metMate is designed to run like a native application on your home screen (just click the plus symbol on your iphone/itouch to add at the bottom of your browser).
Unfortunately it does not work. I do like the look of the rain radar screen shot, shame I cannot see the real thing. Since I have purchased the WeatherNZ app I will stick with it. Also more efficient on data as not loading a web page every time. Also provides Snow reports, Surf, Tide, Marine, Moon etc
The radar pictures at the moment come straight from the met services web site.
they are rather too big even for their own site .. and hence this might be your issue.
I've got a solution for this, but not yet implemented.
Also google appengine might be causing some issues ... thanks for the heads up.
Also I have a version which works using the html5 stds using cache (offline mode - like google reader), so the app would not pull any data from the internet servers except new radar pics and data, but as apple hasn't fully implemented all the html5 cache aspects, its still work in progress. Also the UIView which I believe apple use to load the web pages into instead of safari take a little longer to load than a native.
