Has anyone installed "Sygic Mobile Maps" yet? - its a turn by turn voice navigation app

Looks pretty good, but at $84 NZ dollar I wouldn't mind someone doing a review first.....

Cheers for the linkage - sets a good idea of price-point for others to follow like Tom Tom etc.
Hopefully some in-depth reviews pop soon.

Sygic have the Mcguider 2009 available for Windows mobile which seems to have gotten really good reviews.

I'd say check out the demos of Mcguider on youtube.

Whilst looking into TomTom details (http://i.tuaw.com/?date=2009/06/20&slug=european-nav-app-first-out-of-the-gate-for-iphone&a=show-post&commentspage=) I came across a reference to Sygic and dropped by here to see of anyone else had heard of it.

Looks interesting.

This afternoon I downloaded and played with the MobileMaps app. This is Sat Nav for the iPhone. I ran it's through its paces on a trip into the viaduct and back (from Manukau) it works really really well. The interface is a little clumsy at times, especially when looking up address etc. but for $84.00 it really works well. The GPS positioning was just about bang on...

I installed it to my jailbroken iPhone 3G for FREE,and it worked great!I would rate this by 7 out of 10 compare to a GPS Navigation unit.

I have had this for several weeks now and the GPS positioning is good.
However there have been a number of times when although the visual representation is accurate the voice commands have lagged by a long time so that they are useless - telling you to turn left some hundreds of meters after you have turned left. I am running it on a 3G phone and I wondered whether it was a matter of processing power and perhaps it would perform better on the faster 3GS.

Same here. Excellent app, but seldomly the voice instructions will lag a bit behind. Not by much. I too think the 3GS might have that fixed with the better CPU.

As to the price, TomTom already said they wouldn't make their app available for much less than their hardware units, or else they'd be cannibalizing their own products. I'm waiting for it to come out to finally decide on a car dock, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hi, I've got a 3gs and recently bought this app. The occasional lag with voice instructions is still there, especially when there are multiple turns quickly. Also, they haven't made use of the compass functionality to orient the direction at startup at least.

A couple of routes were out of date, such as the motorway on the way from Auckland airport to waitakere. It's a relatively new motorway there but I thought it should have been there.

Great software overall and not a bad first iPhone version. I'm hoping that updates wil fix the minor issues.

US$200 for the mount and software vs. NZ$ 85 for Sygic (software only).

$200 US for the mount and software - well it certainly sounds like TomTom customers will be getting well mounted.

For that sort of money it will need to have full iPhone integration - ie with iPhone contacts etc, music mute on voiceover etc etc etc. If it does it may get some traction - if not MobileMaps will kill it. The only real frustration I have with MobileMaps is the lack of integration, especially with Music.

Especially given TomTom pricing usually only includes 1 map ie NZ only, and updates cost annual $ as well.

Hi guys,

Been awhile since I posted here, moved to Perth in Feb of this year so been busy working and the such.

I have tried the following Nav apps - Sygic Australia, TomTom on my 3G iPhone, still waiting to test Navigon.

Sygic Mobile Maps 2009

PROS
Comes with both Australian & New Zealand maps, has better maps for Australia than TomTom, Navman or Navigon. As the last three do not have my complete street. Nice icons easy to use, speed warning with nice speed icon & sound, pretty spot on with all speed signs.

CONS
No touch swiping when navigating icons small arrows at bottom, keyboard a bit small can make mistakes when entering address.

TomTom

PROS
Nice icons & menu system scrolls up well, better keyboard (Apples main keyboard) entry than Mobile Maps, very easy to use one handed if required. Voice directs very clear.

CONS
Maps not up todate, IQ Routing is very bad supposed to be better directions. Speed warning only shows red no sound.

Navigon Mobile Navigator (Still need to test on the road)

PROS
Menus very similar to ipod 4 bottons at the bottom Main Menu, Favs, Recents & Contacts and with 4 main buttons (Address, POI, Home & Show map), GUI of map is the best. Again keyboard same as TomTom.

CONS
Menu is not the best compaired to Sygic or TomTom which spoils the over all effect.

I found with TomTom that I had to turn off the IQ Routes as this is pathetic I tried it a couple of times coming back from Rockingham and it was taking me down back roads and getting me to do U-turns etc, when turned off it took me the most direct root.

I have gone head to head with my Navman S200 & Sygic Mobile Maps and found that Mobile Maps didn't do to bad and was pretty much step by step behind the Navman, one thing I found is that Mobile Maps told me 200 metres before and then again just before the turn and as I was turning were as my Navman told me at 200 metres and then again when I turned which if you didn't know or see on the device the name of the street you were going to turn down you might have missed the turn off.

So far I like the icons and feel of Sygic's Mobile Maps as it reminds me of most of the main stay GPS Nav units (Navman, Garmin etc) however TomTom has a simple easy to use menu system when they update there maps will be a very good app. Navigon does have the best looking map GUI however is lacking alot in the look & feel of the menu were both TomTom & Sygic both nail it in there own ways as both their maps and menus follow.

Best value for money if you live in New Zealand or Australia & will do what it states then I would go for Sygic's Mobile Maps. I use Mobile Maps more now than my Navman as my iPhone goes every where with me, helped me out a few times now when traveling to a new location.

Down the track once TomTom get more updated maps then you might see a change and I could look at TomTom then.
