do we think Vodafone will let us know the contract price?
should we just sign up and let them decide the price later in the year??

the web site say "Plan pricing and handset subsidies will be available closer to launch date."
we are now three days out, how much close can they get??

what kind of idiot think that not telling us the price will help sales??

they did much the same last year too....

maybe the head of marketing needs a new job??

There might be more to it than this if telecom is going to be selling the iphone (hope so)
they might be waiting to see what plan prices telecom offer?
but you would think if vodafone new the plan prices and thort they were competitive why not just tell us all. at least then we would have something different to moan about.

I don't understand why people get so emotional about these things!

What are you wanting to know specifically? The subsidised handset price or the plan prices? Surely there will be similar handset subsidies as per the iPhone 3G so use that as a gauge if you are desperate to budget for it.

As for plan pricing - considering that the HTC Magic has just launched and is being touted as being a direct competitor to the iPhone (and has the same plans as the iPhone plans) then surely the new iPhone plans won't be too disimilar to those currently in place?

Like Mauricio said, this method worked for Vodafone last year - very well. If Telecom were to be launching details about their own iPhone release and if it were to be happening to coincide with the VF release then I'm sure Telecom would have said something by now.

Summary - budget on the fact that the 3GS will have similar handset subsidies and plan prices as the current iPhone 3G. If Vodafone announces a price decrease in plans and an increased subsidy then you will have been presented with a very welcome surprise.

Why? It is true. I remember really well in these forums how a lot of people complained about the pricing, and next week after the launch that same people were asking questions on how to use the handset.

They have no need to be open, to bring things forward or promote the product. It just sells.

Also, consider that if you buy the handset on full price you might still be locked into a contract - Vodafone does it. So plan carefully because if you buy it full price and sign a contract then you might wound up paying a lot more if you decide to move away from Vodafone.

On the other hand, if you use the subsidy you will have a higher fee to pay if you decide the Vodafone service is not good enough and want to move to Telecom (assuming Vodafone is the only one selling this handset).

my comment above was out of line.

If i know the price a few weeks before launch I can take some time and think about it, put aside a few $$ to buy it.

in this case I won't be standing in line...
not because I don't want it but because I dont know if I can afford it.

I may buy one in a few weeks, once I have seen the price and put aside a few $$.

They've announced the full handset price though? Therefore assume that the subsidised prices will be a couple of hundred more than the current 3G and work to that. Seriously, the pricing isn't going to differ so much that your budget is going to be all out of wack.

It's not rocket science. If you were serious about getting the phone on launch day then you would have put aside a reasonable amount of money for it by now anyway using last years launch pricing as a guide.

Can you explain this a little more please?  I'm going to buy one at full price and put my existing VF work SIM in it.

If you just use your plan that's fine. If you sign a contract into a new plan then you will be locked into that contract for whatever term you sign. Be careful what you sign. Contracts don't necessarily give you discounts - you can buy a full price handset and still be locked on a contract.

yep I imaging pricing will go out on the day I had a converstaion with vodafone twitter and they just had a bunch of excuses like they are last in the chain said there was at least 1/2 a dozen reasons why they cant release pricing but they only gave 1. We just have to wait. Its as simple as that.

Personally what with 2 degrees on the horizon and telecom I think they are too scared to release a price till the last second so the other providers dont have time to advertise an under cutting price. Might be wrong but I still think it is the same old storey in NZ Not like Aussie. They had details out well before release date. Maybe in the future we will get more competitive pricings but dont hold your breathe.

At least we are not in the US stuck with a single provider. But maybe telecom and 2 degrees wont get the phone here.. Time will tell. I personally are sick of being stuffed about and not given answers . I might just fly to aussie buy a phone unlocked get the gst back at customs on the way home and stick it in whatever provider i like

Good idea - tell us how much that saves you so we can all plan to do the same.

Seriously, it's 3 days away from launch. Vodafone has no competition with the iPhone at the moment so they don't need to provide competitive pricing details prior to the launch in order to attract customers.
