I can buy an Iphone from the US for around $300,
does anyone know what is involved in 'unlocking' it, or getting it to work in NZ?

NO to get it at that price you need a 24 month contract with AT&T and then you will not be able to unlock it for the length of the contract.

Google "iphone dev blog" they have all the information you need.

The only issue is whether or not you sign up for a contract. With a contract, you'll still be on the hook for the monthly payments or contract termination fees.

Without the contract, you can unlock and jailbreak it.

No scam involved.

phone is either $99/199/299,
early termination fees $170 all USD.

Can onyone answer the original question?

A friend of mine did it and it worked fine for him. In fact he bought 5 over and sold them cheap to his mates. So fairly sure it works. If the phone is bought through AT&T and is locked then there are plenty of unlocking tools around. Heaps of youtube tutorials explaining step by step so try Google and Youtube.

problem
unlocked phones dont do any push notifications.
unlocking kills this ability
why dont u buy a true unlocked phone from aussie and get the gst back on entry thru the TRS system
i have a ist gen american phone and if u google it youll see software unlocks kill push on the phone.
so no apps like AIM or IM+ give you those push notifications.
Mobile me stiill does push email it is just notifications.
It is a pain to not have that

Next post: Hi I parallel imported an I-phone, now it is broken and Apple here in NZ won't fix it under warranty.

There is a fix for the push notifications that works
In Cydia. Just search for "push fix". Doesn't work when wifi is active.
