I'm experimenting with developing some software for streaming tv, for a project I'm about to do at work. I've been able to test it over wifi from an iPod touch, but I wondered if there was a Telecom and/or Vodafone user here that might be able to check if it works for them.

To test it, fire up Safari, and open http://devnz.com:6699. You should be shown a list of freeview channels, and clicking on one should start live tv. It can take about 12-15 seconds for the video to appear (mainly due to both iPhone buffering and time added by on-the-fly transcoding).

I'll leave the port open for the next couple hours, and hopefully someone will be able to check it.

I should mention - you wont be able use that streaming in a browser on a PC, so dont bother clicking on the link above. You might end up seeing the list of channels, but thats about it.

Oh, one more thing. This was intended for a user's personal streaming, so not meant to support multiple-concurrent users. This might give unexpected results if too many of you try at the same time. (I just remembered, when I saw more than one of you trying right now...)

Worked fine over Vodafone 3G in good reception area. Short 20-30sec buffering to start, then no skips or buffering during the short time I played with it.

Tested with 3G turned off (GPRS), but long buffering, and halts mid playback.

Apart from a screwed up aspect ratio, looked good!

I'm able to open the site on the iphone... tv2 looks ok, but I wasn't able to open other channels.

Unfortunately you and about four other people seemed to be battling for the one tuner plugged in at the same, and it doesnt handle this type of contention very gracefully yet. I'm pretty sure it'd have worked fine for you for the other channels if you'd been the only person trying. I'll have to think about this aspect a bit more....

Yeah, I suspect it'd be pretty grim over GPRS. You might have also encountered what I mentioned above with multiple-concurrent access, which can leave it sitting there waiting for video to start (even though server has given up with no tuner available).

Tested with 3G over VFNZ network, streams beautifully after a 20-30 second buffer. Nice work..

Didnt have any issues with the aspect ratio watching C4..

I've shut the test down now, and closed the port.
