With wide speculation that a new Apple iPhone will be announced by Steve Jobs at WWDC in less than a days time, and with some of the material that had been 'leaked' so far, what are your thoughts?

I have been a die hard Nokia fan for years, but I did briefly try the iPhone 3G not too long after its release. I disliked a number of things about it, most of which have now been resolved. Additionally, my current phone (A Nokia E72) is easily the buggiest Nokia phone I have ever used, and Nokia seem to have no commitment to fix it.

Many years ago when I bought my 3310 I absolutely loved it because of the ease of use and simple elegant styling that Nokia were well renowned for at the time. Unfortunately they really seem to have lost that market niche to Apple in recent years as they've moved towards increasingly complex - and arguably frustrating - devices.

The new iPhone is bound to be typical of Apple products. If, like me, you're happy to pay a premium for asthetics and a straightforward and fluid user experience then the iPhone is hard to beat, but if you're after some serious geekery then look elsewhere.

You'll like it, if you have used iPod Touch, you'll figure out that the interface is easy. There are something that certain group of people dislike, like the lock-down approach with apps and control. However, it is a great device that sync harmonically through iTunes - which itself is a love-hate for some people.

I used to hate iTunes until I got given an iPod, and slowly coming to enjoy iTunes without being too pedantic about it. In the end, it is just another software application that you just learn to use and avoid its limitation. In the end, it just works.

I'm probably most curious to know how soon it will be available in NZ. Assuming it is announced tomorrow, when would be your best guesses (Given what's happened with the 3G and 3GS) as to when we will be able to buy one?

A bit of quick research suggests that the 3GS was released on the 19th of June last year and available for purchase from Vodafone NZ on the 10th of July, so the wait wasn't too long at all.

Having said that, the iPad is due here in July and I wonder if Apple might want to stagger the release of the two products in order to get as much publicity as they can.

I use mine for work -they provided it, and it's very cool. Integrates with outlook perfectly. Only real bummer I see is the battery life. With GPS, wifi, 3G turned on with regular use it lasts about 6-7hrs, but on standby can last up to 1-1.5 days

also when they bring the iPhone HD here, more than likely the 3GS will drop in price.

That's a good point actually. I can't imagine they would really want a simultaneous release (i.e. within a couple weeks of each other) in case one product erodes into the sales of the other, and vice versa, as well as both products competing against each other in terms of marketing.

Rumour has it that the new model will have improved battery life, but we'll find out for sure soon enough.

As you can infer from my signature I'll be getting one regardless!

I'm quite interested in the rumour of a front-facing video camera, especially with Skype now allowing calls over 3G.

The release for iPhone  4 in NZ is for end July.
iPhone 4 and iPad are not competing products as perform differnent roles.

I know it's July my original post was from before WWDC.

I know they perform two different roles I don't live in a cave, my point was that Apple wouldn't want people to get confused or lost in marketing two brand new products at the same time, that's why I said "competing against each other in terms of marketing."

Either way my argument is moot and is no longer relevant.

I'd say the iPhone 4 will be end of July and the iPad will be a quieter release a little later - but not September as that's new iPod time.

I have a hunch that. iOS4 for iPad may be in work, and perhaps there could be a quick/tiny refresh for iPad and iPod Touch in September... Otherwise tiny refresh for iPad in Jan/Feb 2011.

The Apple site is still showing the iPad as 'coming July' and it would personally be annoyed if they delayed it now that July is just around the corner. In fact, I was hoping that they would be starting to take pre-orders for it about now.
