Ordered an L5 Remote for my iphone on the weekend, will post some impressions back here when I get it.

Made the choice based on:

Current software is seems better than thinkflood option.

Will learn any IR code (not sure how this would work with the thinkflood option).

Connects to dock connector. It will be interesting to see how the redeye mini works to overcome the system wanting to output audio through the headphone adapter, there would also seem to be some issues around input due to the presumably analogue input process?

It is available now vs ~ September according to the local supplier

Any thoughts?

Is this a 'learning' remote or can you download the discrete codes from a site?
I had used various learning remotes for some time, however after using the Logitech Harmony One there is no going back in ability to program it by selecting the devices and the codes are downloaded from Internet

From downloading the app the process seems to be.

1. Design the buttons you want, with the shape, text and some other buttons.
2. Choose the button you want to allocate.
3. Point the remote you have at the iphone L5, and push the button.
4. The L5 now will send out the code it just "learned"
5. Combine the buttons on your l5 to make macros.

6. Profit...

So the remote dongle arrived Saturday, in a sealed plastic bag inside a retail box, inside a usps box. 8 day travel time.

Have a few notes to make on it:

1. Does what it advertises
2. Doesn't seem to use up much battery.
3. Works in place of my apple remote (and hence front row and eyetv).
4. Seems quite powerful and also directional.
5. Had trouble with the aircon remote, not because it could read the code, but because I suspect the aircon remote sends a group of signals together (eg. temp, fan speed, fan direction etc.). This meant learnt codes set the aircon back to the setting I learnt with the L5.
6. Smaller than I thought.
7. At this time the software won't let you import codes/designs, so I have a bit of a poor mans looking apple remote substitute.

Software suggestions:

1. Integrate one of the wifi mac remotes, then I can do both with one app.
2. Give me some colour/graphics/icon/non functional boxes/shapes so I can customise my remotes.
3. Give me an os x app so I can design the interfaces faster.
4. importing/exporting per above.
5. Forum on the L5 website to share tips/tricks with other owners.

I would recommend it, especially as for me, who uses a mac can control eyetv and the tv, and stereo when wanting to begin playback of a recorded show (eg. the football this morning).

Note total cost including shipping and app (free) was NZ$95 (cheaper than other learning remotes if you happen to have an iphone or ipodTouch lying around.

More people might now as the ipodtouch can do background calling in skype (v. soon), and be a remote, good replacement for a home phone?
