I just tried the FaceTime switch and after a few minutes it activated!

I am using my age old Vodafone NZ number on 2degrees.

No wifi here so no live testing yet but all appears to be good.

So what's your verdict so far on the iPhone?
BTW, if you want to test the facetime once you are in wifi, give me a yell.

Glad I made the decision to get one but also glad I waited until it was this good.

Will go find some wifi tomorrow, PM me your number please.

The problem with ported numbers seems to come once you try to connect a call even though the facetime icon shows - good luck!

Has anyone else had any luck with this? I have an 021 number ported to Telecom. For me the settings page just keeps saying 'waiting for activation'.

This just shows it must be a network issue in the way networks handle ported numbers. I've read that some people overseas have got it working with a ported number. I've also ready a couple people with 021 numbers ported to 2degrees having facetime activated and working. I'm with XT and have a ported 021 number and my facetime wont activate.

So what are 2degree doing different with their ported numbers and SMS messages from XT?

If there was only a way to track your SMS to see where it gets lost, like when you run a traceroute with a network packet.

Any one care to explain the technical side of the facetime activation? it cant be a simple one-to-one SMS conversation with apples servers or else there wouldnt be so many issues with a ported number.

Just a FYI anyone with a 027 number on Vodafone may have issues activating facetime we know what the issue is and its out of the Vodafone NZ network. Vodafone NZ are working with the other carrier to resolve the issue ASAP.

Thanks John

It doesn't work for me on Vodafone ported to XT.

I really wish Apple would fix it! Maybe iOS 4.1 will sort it, by allowing activation based on email addresses for iPhones too.

4.1 is supposed the fix the ported issue via email reg for Facetime and that is only a couple of days away.

4.1 won't fix the ported number activation problem. Yes it allows for activation via email but that's only for iPod touches. What I've read is that developers who have got their hands on the iPhone 4 4.1 GM firmware say you still can only activate FaceTime via your phone number.

I have an 021 number that I ported from Voda to XT and I successfully activated FaceTime today. I am running iOS 4.1.

Please note that until today I have constantly failed to activate FaceTime.

Maybe what made it work for me was that I first went into settings -> Phone and removed the +64 from my number and left just the 021...

Just for the reference I activated FaceTime without having any WiFi coverage at the time!
