I'm trying to help a friend list items on trademe using his ipad. It does not let us upload photos (shows nothing to select when trying to browse for a photo).
Has anyone done this successfully? Perhaps there is a jailbreak workaround?
I can't believe it's not possible as my cheap little android phone does it quite happily.

It's a general limitation. No file uploads (or downloads, for that matter).

Downloads are possible with third party apps like goodreader, dropbox, and some browsers like mercury. But can't figure any workarounds for uploads except linking to remote stored photos. If you are listing with the Sella app you can upload pics. Trademe is not up to the game here.

Thanks for the info.
At least I now know I will not be getting an ipad.

I've been an apple user for a long time but I bought an android phone because it was cheap. I,m now thinking it is also better.

Anyway don't want to start another of those arguments. My friend is wishing he had read a few more of them (android vs ios) before buying the ipad though.

...OK, and I'm back. Here's my contribution:

IMHO the iPhone is a great data access device, with excellent rendering of full-size web sites on a small screen. However, as a phone, it's really not that great. My N95 was better.

Edit, not flamey enough - adding:

no access to the file system is allowed in the iOS ecosystem (in general).

iOS devices was (originally) intended to be 'information/content consumable' rather than focusing on content creation. What I mean by this is the device is focused on retrieving and displaying information in a read only fashion with support the occasional editing.

Although having said that Apple is starting to move towards accepting more content creation (like the creating the iWork suite on iOS) and GarageBand etc...

also a little secret that I keep - note there are alternative app web browsers out there that will support file uploads like iCab mobile.

best browser is still Safari imo

While I've not used the TradeMe app for creating listings, its quite possible that it allows you to upload images from your iPads photo library.

I was initially confused by Salty's comments about file uploads not being allowed by Apple, until it clicked that he must've meant via the browser. I upload files created on my iPhone all the time (e.g photos to Twitter and videos to YouTube).

What I don't have is the ability to navigate a filesystem and select a file to share, but with the media sharing options I have already, this is not a feature I miss on a phone.

So - to summarize.
If you want to upload photos on Trademe while using your iPad, first you must download the correct ap.
And as an aside, can I grow a beard, own an iPad, covet an Android phone while using a Linux based OS on my work machine? I dearly hope it's possible.
Answers on a postcard please.

unless the trademe app has been updated in the last few days you can not use it to list an item.
As far as I know, you must jailbreak your ios device to run an alternative browser which can upload photos.

I would be very happy if I am wrong.
