Just looking for some ideas for iPad 2 cases. I have a family member who is probably going to want a case and stand for their iPad. The smart cover looks like a good case but $70 seems way to steep. Do the cheaper cases, like the dealxtreme ones, work/look ok? What other cases are people using? Pros and cons?

I have a STM skinny from dick smith which provides full protection and I also use a leather smart cover I purchased from sw-box for $40nz which I actually prefer as it's easy to take off when I'm reading

Ive got the STM skinny and the smart cover. Needless to say after 3 months use the STM skinny's "loop" to attach to the back for using as a stand now doesn't hold its shape and the case cannot be used as a stand anymore...... not impressed.
I can recommend the smart cover though, just make sure you get some sort of back protection like a skin or one of the cheap back covers on Trademe.

I just put some rubber dots on the back to protect it. You can get them from a hardware store. I did actually try ordering idroplets which offered free global shipping, but the guy who ran it never provided them, and when I enquired about it, he just refunded the money, so I wouldn't recommend them.

That STM case looks expensive for what it is, and doesn't look to be all that well made. I have got a logitech neoprene case for transporting mine, as well as the smart cover.

I use a leather smartcover and an "eggshell" back cover. Works a charm and looks great too.

I have used a marware microshell folio. Liked it a lot. Very thin and fine quality.

Now I have my own iPad I've ordered a cheap dealextreme case. Will probably order a marware off amazon if the dx one is too cheap and nasty.

Right, so the smart cover style case are good but the ones that have protection on the back are preferable. Where do you get the screen protector things from? Are some better than others?

I think the STM Skinny's are good. I think they were mentioned above. DSE sell them as well.

Screen protectors are personal choice. I don't have one on my iPad. I feel that if I'm not using it, it will have the cover on it, and if I am using it, unless I am trying to use my keys at the same time, I see it as unlikely that I will damage/scratch the screen. But thats just my opinion.

Otherwise, if your willing to spend the money, you can also get the Apple Smart Cover plus a clip on shell or softer rubberized case for the back of the iPad.

It's all a matter of personal choice!

Around the house - $7 clear rubbery back cover off trademe.
Away on holiday - STM skinny.
I did the stick-on dots on the back initially while sorting out my strategy, they worked well.

Changing from the back protector to the skinny is a bit of a hassle. The skiiny is easy but the back protector is a bit of a fight. We only do it occasionally, when going away, otherwise the iPad never leaves the house, so not too bad.

I agree, best would be a back protector that stays on all the time, and add a smart cover knock-off for when you take it out of the house. But I couldn't find a smart cover equivalent at the time. Apple's is just too expensive for me.

I do have some concerns about the longevity of the tab on the skinny, other than that I really like it. Nice small form factor, doesn't make your iPad feel like a laptop. And it does auto on/off which I wasn't expecting and is really useful.

I don't think a screen protector is needed, that's what toughened glass is for.

DSE's online specials this week is half priced xtrememac covers for the ipad 2. I ordered the micro folio (now $30) and another case that covers the back for use with the smart cover ($20). THey're definately not worth full price, but at half that its worth a shot to see how they go.
