I have just picked up a second hand 3GS Iphone which was sold as being in tip top order (!). It does actually look almost perfect however when trying to make a call both the inbuilt mic and earpiece will not work. Using the external speaker you can hear the call but the mic still doesnt work. Using handsfree mic/earpieces everything works fine as does bluetooth handsfree. I have checked the earphone plug socket...it is clean with no obstruction, I have also tried a full restore with no change.
As far as I know the screen has not been off the phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the next best step?

Ahhh, the joys of buying technology second hand. I would definitely be demanding a refund as it was misrepresented. If you don't get any joy you may be up for the small claims court (depending where you got it from)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Do a DFU restore first, if it's still bung send it back for a refund.

I had a iPhone 4 that did the exact same thing.
It was replaced under warranty. Not much help to you I'm afraid.

Thanks for the useful reply gehenna. It appears now the the screen has recently been replaced so there may be a 'bad connection' issue
