Dratnz: So i was bored and was thinking about upgrading to 3.0 gm. even thou it is final relese next week.

I have iphone 3g. jailbroken 2.2.1. itunes ver 8.2. ( i updated itunes before i read all the threads saying not to ). i have manually added the XT carrier pack. all works well.

If i was to backup via itunes, upgrade to version 3.0. is there a way to get the carrier pack back on, seeing as it wont be jalbroken anymore and i have the wrong version of itunes ?

or do i not really need the xt carrier pack and can just enter in apn number manually etc ?

even if i was to wait till next week for final release, i am wondering if it would still be better holding off until a new jalbreak release is out

thoughts ?

If you have already added the XT Carrier Settings, when you update to 3.0 GM the settings will remain in place. You will only lose them if you have to restore.

I was Jailbroken with 3.0 beta 5 and *updated* to 3.0 GM without any issues and the XT carrier settings remained.

Unfortunately there is no Jailbreak for 3.0 GM yet so you would have to wait for that. 3.0 GM isn't a whole lot different from beta 5, just less buggy. It's a presonal preference really if you can put up with a slighly buggier release to be jailbroken, I would stick with that.
If you can wait for a jailbreak to be available and don't really *need* the jailbreak for anything then do the update.

At the moment there isn't a huge amount of packages available from Cydia that are compatible with 3.0 so for me I prefered the less buggy 3.0 GM.

Cool ..

i was reading some place thou, that it is best to do a restore along the way. If not then the iphone will store 500 odd mbs of data (i am guessing the cydia files).

It's a catch 22.
Do the restore - lose the carrier settings. (Require a Jailbreak to update carrier settings manually)
Either way - you either end up with no carrier settings + 500Mb of "free" data; or carrier settings with Jailbroken phone.

I think my logic is right... ;-)

How do you get that logic? Am a bit confused...
For me.. I have an iPhone which I bought from vodafone (well magnum mac) it's factory unlocked as you all no.. And it's as is... No jailbrojen nor unlocked illegally... Using qwikpwn it whatever...
And then I have updated to iPhone 3.0 os thanks to some nice person GZ :-)
I have no problem with it... It's running much smoother... Faster and overall performance is snappier...
Have not had any prob with carrier settings.. I had bzbullet's file before I updated and it's still there.. And with location option off.. Battery on xt is good as it was on vodafone too ;-)

Hi Scho047,

Was more referring to Dratnz's scenario where he already has 3.0 installed and was wanting to restore the latest firmware (rather than update) so as to be able to "free up" the 500Mb "left over" from the Jailbreak software.

Problem is that once it is restored, the carrier settings are removed, and there is no way to update the carrier settings (3.0 requires itunes 8.2 and itunes 8.2 does not allow update of the carrier settings)

The only way would be to Jailbreak the phone and to copy the carrier settings files across manually.

Which:

a) Can not be done with the latest 3.0OS release (no Jailbreak available yet)

b) Defeats his original purpose for doing the restore - which was to "free up" 500Mb from the Jailbreak files.

It's all a little too convoluted for a Friday morning.

hehe .. yup .. bit tricky for today :)
I can update to version 3.0 ... phone will still work just not be jailbroken ...and will have a chunk of memory put aside for cydia data ..... or just leave it as a jailbroken 2.2.1 for now until 3.0 is jailbroken .. then do a complete wipe / restore, whenever that may be .. wont be too much of a wait i guess :)

Well you can restore to original state and then applie carrier setting using pre 8.2 iTunes which I am sure you can find ad then update the os to 3.0...
For me no restore was needed as it's not been tempered with other than installing the carrier setting and then update to os 3.0 :-)

I upgraded a while ago to 8.2 Beta (for OS Beta 4) and this works fine on V3 AND allows you to update the IPCC file.
8.2 (for BETA5) doesn't allow it and 8.2 (public release) doesn't allow you to either.

If anyone wants to know how to upgrade their 2G iPhone to V3 GM and still be unlocked/activated let me know :-) (no tethering or MMS but thats the limit) (and youtube doesn't work :-( ) (didn't work in any of the beta's and find my iphone on me.com seems not to works now on GM (did on Beta 5) but maybe its broken for everyone at the moment ...

I see that the carrier settings in this thread add the XT logo to the display but out of curiosity what is displayed without this update? On Vodafone it's obviously 'VodaNZ', but on Telecom when Joe Public just throws in their new SIM (without updating the carrier settings) it's.....?

mattlaing: For mrscullen89: Apologies - it is not the file itself that you copy across, but the contents of the file. I used a mac to do this so on a mac you can right click and select to open up the folder containing all of the necessary files to copy across.

In windows, I'm not sure how you would do this... Does someone else know?

Rename to (or add) .zip, and double click. (ipcc are just zip files)

No, "TelecomNZ" (there might be a space, I can't remember). It scrolls left to right, inside a box wide enough for "Tele" and half of the c I think.

And the only way to fix that is to install the carrier settings from this thread? Even if Telecom aren't officially going to be selling the iPhone would it still be possible for them/Apple to release carrier settings?

hi, if i activate and install the xt package on my new iphone using my windows computer running itunes 8.1 will i be able to use my mac running itunes 8.2 to transfer music,videos,pics,contacts etc, thanks
